Experimentally demonstrated the interaction between the two bandgaps. •Numerically demonstrated the effectiveness of resonators in attenuating flexural waves generated due to blast loads. Performed drop tower experiments to measure impact response of sandwich beams with and without resonators and experimentally demonstrated the ability of resonators to attenuate impact loads.•Designed a wide band, low frequency, high transmission loss acoustic filter using acoustic and elastic resonators. Developed fully coupled acoustic-structural finite element models to obtain the transmission loss coefficients. Utilized parameter retrieval method to demonstrate the negative effective density and negative effective bulk modulus behavior of membrane-type and expansion chamber Metamaterials. Demonstrated the presence of a tunable pass-band associated with double negative Metamaterial behavior. •Designed and manufactured sandwich beam with resonators and composite facesheets. Experimentally demonstrate bandgap creation due to local resonance phenomena. Manufactured sandwich beams with resonators tuned to the first beam natural frequency. Experimentally demonstrated the antiresonance phenomena. Demonstrate the effectiveness of sandwich beams with resonators in attenuating narrow banded, low frequency loading associated with hull slamming. Show less
