In my previous position as a technical writer, I had made efforts to expand my job role to include some software-related work. Because I'd written some software for training purposes while in the Air Force, I felt that developing some sort of online help system for one of Triton's software products might be a worthwhile goal. I researched tools that were available for that sort of work and eventually settled on a development tool called ForeHelp. I purchased it and began learning how to use it, mostly as a side project. Eventually, the work I was able to win management's approval to work with one of the software engineer's to incorporate a help system into a software project! I went on to work on other little side projects, mostly using "classic" Visual Basic 5.0/6.0. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to transition out of my technical writer role and into software-development, starting as a Technical Application Specialist and eventually becoming a Software Engineer.

A few months after I began working for Triton, the company created a Technical Writer position in the Engineering department and began recruiting for it. Because I'd done quite a bit of that in the latter years of my time in the Air Force, and also because I thought I could make a greater contribution to the company in such a role, I formally applied for the position. One of the requirements of the job was experience with a desktop publishing software called PageMaker. I had never heard of it, but I really wanted the job, so I purchased a copy of it and taught myself enough to be dangerous, I suppose, but I felt I could honestly say I had some experience with it. Anyway, I interviewed for the position and was fortunate enough to be hired! I began working in the position in January of 1998.

I am constantly amazed by all the opportunities this modern age of digital connectedness makes possible. My deep desire is to find ways to take advantage of that connection to contribute to the world, to offer something of value, to be creative, to encourage, to always look for the positive and to never give up. Life is much too interesting to take for granted.

Over the years I had become increasingly curious about the whole world of online work and "telecommuting" and was interested in part-time work, so after some research (aided by a subscription to flexjobs.com) I found a position with Lionbridge, a global outsourcing company. The position involved evaluating Search Engine results for relevance and various other criteria.

I had developed some computer-based training software over the past several years (at that time) and had enjoyed it very much, when I discovered an opportunity to pursue it full time I interviewed for a position on the Multimedia Training Team and was accepted. In this role I managed a small team of two civilian developers and was able to do a little work on several interactive computer-based courses, as well. It was near the end of this time that I applied for retirement and transitioned out of the military.

In this role I managed several Space Systems training courses, including the Apprentice-level training and two Journeyman-level courses for experienced technicians.

I returned to an Instructor Supervisor role, but this time for the new Mark IV-B course. In this role I managed a small team of instructors and taught the relevant sections of the course which I had previously developed as a Mark IV-B course writer.

After receiving specialized training from the defense contractor developing the Mark IV-B Tactical Weather Satellite Ground System, I, along with a small team of other trainers, developed a course to train experienced Air Force technicians on the Mark IV-B system.

After completing the Air Force's Technical Training Instructor Course I was assigned the position of Instructor Supervisor for the entry-level technical training course for the Space System career field. In this role I managed a team of instructors, including performing instructor performance in the classroom, counseling students as necessary and developing training materials.

This was a one-year assignment as a contract-compliance inspector for a northern-tier missile defense radar system. In this position I interacted with the civilian contract managers and technicians to ensure the radar systems were being operated and maintained in accordance with the contract. To that end, I performed daily inspections of multiple specialized departments within the radar complex.

During this phase of my Air Force career I worked primarily as a technician on the (very) new Global Positioning System (a.k.a. GPS). My responsibilities included maintaining various elements of the "ground element" of the GPS network (e.g. satellite command and control equipment). During this time I also developed an On-The-Job-Training program for GPS technicians.

My first duty station after completing basic training and a specialty electronics school for the Phased Array Radar career field. I progressed from entry-level technician-helper to crew chief over the span of eight years.
