The relationship between culturable and unculturable bacteria was examined in two ways: 1) classification based on DNA sequencing from cultured bacteria and 2) metagenomics of the entire microbial community. Using the two techniques, bacterial diversity can be compared from the same environment. The microbiota examined was swabbed from human skin, cultured and followed by DNA isolation and PCR amplification. Gel electrophoresis confirmed the presence and size of target PCR product. DNA sequencing was carried out by the UC Berkeley Sequencing Center utilizing NGS. Sequencing data was aligned via BLAST to determine bacterial taxonomy, later used to compare to classical microbiological techniques (culturing).

Honor'S Program

As a member of the Honor's Commission, the role of publicity and technology communicates events and important news between commission and all other Honors Program members (or all of SMC community). Through programs such as MS Office, Google Suite, Photoshop, and Canva, flyers and promotional posters are created and distributed across campus and groups on social media.
