Bianca Pendleton is a determined, compassionate, tenacious leader who happens to be a student-athlete at The University of New Haven. She is pursuing a major in clinical psychology. Her experience of playing basketball for a nationally recognized Nike-sponsored Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) team, has made Bianca acutely aware of the demands physically, academically, and mentally imposed on student-athletes to perform at the highest level. The price to perform is extraordinarily high. Unfortunately, the expectation comes with many student-athletes experiencing depression, social awkwardness, body shaming, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. Her quest is to share her experience while supporting the athletic community. Bianca understands their journey and is committed to supporting each person she encounters. To that end, she is a student brand ambassador as well as an event planning coordinator for Competitive Edge EQ, a non-profit organization that focuses on building the emotional intelligence of student-athletes both academically and athletically. As an active collegiate student-athlete, Bianca also inspires to mentor young athletes. Her passion for ensuring that student-athletes have a successful experience moved her to conduct a mental health panel discussion for Competitive Edge EQ. She curated a safe space for student-athletes to share their personal challenges. The environment allowed participants to share their struggles with balancing both personal life and sport at the collegiate level. She strives to establish and create a safe space with resources and guidance for students to communicate effectively and thrive academically, athletically, and socially. Bianca aspires to be a psychiatrist who offers mental health services to black and brown communities. She believes that representation matters. Communities are fully capable of healing communities when supported by someone who reflects them. Her goal is to create a nurturing environment that supports the mental and emotional well-being of the community.
