About Bianca Nozaki-Nasser

www.biancanasser.comI am an artist, designer, media-maker, and educator living in Los Angeles, California. I use visual and interactive media as tools for radical movement building. My work reimagines the relationships between creative technology, digital organizing, and cultural work. I joined 18 Million Rising (@18millionrising), a national digital-first Asian American advocacy organization, in 2018 bringing with me 9 years of experience developing creative strategies for brands, nonprofits, and start-ups. As the org's first design + product strategist I worked with the campaigns team to use strategic planning, pop culture, and creative media and technology to mobilize our over 120,000 members. Now, as Creative and Strategy Director I am a senior staff leader responsible for management, oversight, and operation of 18MR’s design and digital strategy. In addition to my work at 18MR, I am a cofounder of the Antiracist Classroom (@antiracistclassroom), an initiative to counteract racism and white supremacy in design education and practice, a core organizer of amwa (@amwa.work), a collective of femme and non-binary pan-Asians that use art and design as tools for radical resistance, community building, and political education. Born to a Syrian-Lebanese father and Japanese American mother, my arts practice draws on my own experience navigating familial legacy, transnational culture, material language, and the politics of artifacts. I've participated in several artist residencies including Activation Residency in New York and Level Ground in Los Angeles. I have also led workshops, design research programs, and lectures nationally and internationally. In my early career, I co-founded a mobile-first platform for patient-generated health data management and also developed a cultural trend forecasting tool based on social data while working as a cultural strategist for a global advertising agency. I received my M.F.A. in Media Design Practices from the ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena and my B.A. in Communication from the University of Southern California. Past Clients: GSK, Starbucks, Kohler, Starkey Hearing Technologies, Airbnb, Netflix, The Getty Foundation & Pacific Standard Time, Twitter, Starbucks, AIGA Los Angeles, Samsung, USC, UCLA, The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, The California Endowment , Casamigos Tequila

Develop and deliver engaging lectures, seminars, and studio workshops on design, social impact, and communication strategy to a diverse student population"Future Tripping" transdisciplinary studio course that will study the connection between futurism, science fiction, design, and social justice movements. For designers, one of science fiction’s most useful requirements is the necessity to suspend disbelief. In order to be immersed in possibility, you must, for at least a few moments, ignore the current constraints of reality. Together we will look at how past moments from social justice movements are often overlooked as examples of speculative world-building. Students will learn how to infuse beliefs and values into the spaces, objects, and systems that will carry us into the future."Never Again 9066" transdisciplinary studio & humanities class that addresses the unconstitutional incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. ACCD undergrad students will research and develop visually dynamic artworks, educational materials, and a public installation. The goal is to share key aspects of Japanese American history while connecting them to issues of civil liberties in the present.
