The other new hires straight out of college CS degrees wrote the most complicated C++ code I've never seen, total gibberish to my 'C' eyes.Apart form my bad experience with that manager, I have always admired WD's products and to have a WD recruiter call me was very welcome.
Primarily debugged ARM assembler and 'C' for cell phones, using Qualcomm tools and the Lauterbach in circuit debugger (ICD) with JTAG. Version control was done with Perforce. My main specialty was memory – SDRAM/FLASH(NAND/NOR) writing or fixing drivers to erase/reprogram FLASH and control DRAM timings. Another specialty was maintaining the secure bootloader code. Fixed general bugs found by testing and the Coverity code analyzer.
Designed hardware and firmware for several enclosure management controllers for disk subsystems based on a Motorola MC68HC11 with an Adaptec 93c46 LVD SCSI controller using the SAF-TE protocol running on the 68HC11, Atmel ATmega8 for power supply voltage sensing and fan control, Vitesse SSC100 + VSC120 (MIPS based) microcontrollers for Fibre Channel with the SCSI SES protocol, I had to add custom features to get status of custom hardware not included in the SES spec plus add firmware download plus reprogram CPLD and FLASH in system while disks are active, control LEDs, control fan speed and on/off of up to 3 power supplies. Written in ‘C’ and assembler for 68HC11, AVR and MIPS. Wrote the 1st draft of the updated SAF-TE and SES specs. Wrote routines for other projects that used VxWorks and ThreadX. Invited and contributed to schematic revues to give a firmware perspective to new designs. These products successfully shipped to SUN Microsystems as OEM RAID and JBOD enclosures.
Product was a SCSI-to-SCSI bridge for Exabyte or DAT tape drives to emulate large reel-to-reel and expensive AS400 only tape drives. I wrote 8051 assembler for the SCSI bridge’s microcontroller to allow firmware updates from a tape cartridge to the micros FLASH.
Developed SCSI bridge firmware in x86 assembler to make a generic Exabyte tape drive emulate several makes of more expensive tape drives, used by small businesses with AS400 servers. Designed firmware to use the SCSI bridge to take SCSI medium changer commands and send them to a serially controlled jukebox. Designed firmware for the SCSI bridge to use a hard drive to emulate a tape drive.
Maintained tape motion control firmware in 8051 assembler. designed and programmed 8051 controlled LED display. Developed the SCSI interface hardware for the company’s standard MT750 tape drive that normally shipped with a Pertec interface, Z8002 assembler code debugged using real-time trace hardware that showed address and data bus transactions with decoded instructions. Designed the hardware and firmware for a SCSI to SCSI bridge with STAC data compression, wrote the SCSI drivers for the Fujitsu MB89352A SCSI controllers in x86 assembler, used ICE by Jack Gansle’s company SoftAid, the firmware for driving the compression chip was very simple, to get performance out of the SCSI bridge meant doing some emulation on the host side to buffer data and file marks with special handling of BOT and EOT.
Developed hardware Q-bus disk controllers for PDP11 systems, my main task was to speed up and simplify three hard disk controllers based on a slow prototype using PLD to condense logic and improve timing. Designed the state machine using a PAL20RA10 PLD to get 8-bit internal data bus onto the 16-bit Q-bus at full bus rate to meet the new spec. The disk i/f were SMD (Storage Module Device), ST506 and floppy disk.
