About David Smith

Views and opinions expressed here belong to no one. Not even me.I graduated with a bachelors degree in computer science so that I could be a programmer. Out of college, I tried my hand at several different companies, and in position after position, I found that I had the incredible ability to manage. At first I tested my powers cautiously; only managing my own tasks so that no one would notice. But I soon discovered that if I focused, and applied myself, I could manage entire teams and projects. I concentrated my studies on management, sometimes managing for 12 or more hours a day. I created Gantt charts, and exported them to Excel, then reworked the formulas to be importable to Numbers, then converted them to Venn diagrams. I created PowerPoint decks so large that they could neither be saved nor opened. I had 1-on-1's and told people they had food between their teeth. I stopped using my car's heater and heated seats, in order to strengthen my mind. I toughed it out and endured the pain. For me, even if I was spitting blood, I never gave up.Three years later, I had become so powerful that I could manage anything, and all my hair had fallen out. I managed people, teams, organizations, tasks, projects, products, HR training, mp3 collections, Minecraft servers, Pokémon card collections - my power was without limit, but each new challenge brought with it new disappointment. I don't manage for the glory or the fame. I do it for the fun. And with unlimited ability to manage, the path before me laid barren. Now, I work with others like myself, ready for the day when I will face the ultimate management challenge. On that day, I will truly know myself.

Listed skills include Software Development, Javascript, Web Applications, Agile Methodologies, and 41 others.

Senior Software Development Manager

Current

Seattle, Wa, Us

At Amazon Photos, I manage the teams responsible for our operations, accounts, subscriptions, data-integrity, and security. I also coordinate large-scale security campaigns across the entire organization, and fill the role of project manager in the subscriptions space. My team is my passion, and creating an environment where highly-skilled and intelligent individuals can collaborate with each other and leverage their strengths has allowed me to make great advancements in my space over the last four years. The creation of new, more efficient processes and policies, reduced operational overhead, improved performance and efficiency across the board, the elimination of self-inflicted high-severity incidents, and the realignment of roles and compensation to better align with actual responsibilities, are all accomplishments I'm proud to have driven.

Oct 2022 - Present

Software Development Manager

Seattle, Wa, Us

Jan 2018 - Oct 2022

Software Engineering Manager

Chandler, Az, Us

I started at Infusionsoft as a Front-End Developer, and left three years later, as the senior manager for the 6 teams responsible for the development and maintenance of our flagship product. My responsibilities included management of headcount, management of the software development lifecycle, responsibility for major technical decisions, managing communication and relationships with QA, Design, and Customer Service, and performing project management.

Oct 2014 - Oct 2017

Instructor

Rockit Web Development Bootcamp

I was the instructor for RockIt's 10-week Front-End Web Development course, covering the essentials of logic and data structures, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery and other front-end frameworks used in developing interactive websites and dynamic web applications. This was a hands-on course, perfect for beginners, and I was extremely excited to be able to give back to the community and help encourage and educate a fresh group of aspiring developers.

Jul 2015 - Nov 2015

Engineering Manager

Phoenix, Arizona, Us

I was the manager of the services and infrastructure team. In this role, I was responsible for introducing some new tools and concepts in order to improve development quality of life, and make organizational collaboration easier, such as converting us from SVN to GitHub, and introducing a chat client as an alternative to email. My team's main project was the conversion of a legacy Cold Fusion application into a modern, standards-compliant, service-oriented application with a rich web interface for the purpose of managing vending telemetry devices.

Jun 2013 - Sep 2014

Software Development Manager

Pittsburgh, Pa, Us

I started at SnapRetail as a front-end architect and team lead, but eventually transitioned to managing the front-end team. My efforts here focused on the development of cutting-edge, web-based content creation tools, used to create websites, email, and even printed marketing materials. As an individual contributor, I architected and developed tools which delivered value to the business for years beyond my contributions. As a manager, I built a team that was able to build tooling that competed with offerings from much larger companies with orders of magnitude more resources available.

Nov 2010 - May 2013

Software Architect

Bloomington, In, Us

Mar 2007 - Jan 2008

Intern

Hamilton, Ohio, Us

In my youth, I spent a lot of summers working for the city, doing various IT-related tasks. I came back to work in a full-time capacity to help pay the bills for college, and stepped in to help with some modernization of the Income Tax department, including creating some electronic forms to help people submit their taxes easier, and evaluating hardware and software to develop a better system for scanning and archiving paper tax documents.

Dec 2004 - 2006

Lead Technical Sales Consultant

Boca Raton, Florida, Us

I spent a few years working for Office Depot while I paid my way through college. It was a great job, and I helped to bring a struggling store back into the black, and learned a lot about effective sales techniques while I did it.

Jan 2001 - Dec 2004

Intern

Richland, Wa, Us

PNNL was an incredible opportunity, and while I spent a lot of my time simply in awe, I did find time to design some software for mobile devices for the 2004 Supercomputing Conference, which at the time was pretty edgy stuff. I also had the privilege to work with some very cool equipment, including some infrared camera arrays designed to detect body movement, and allow people to interact with biological data by just reaching out their hands and 'moving' objects around on a 3D screen. I helped with some user testing for this (at the time) unheard of technology.
