(1) Detailed chemical engineering evaluation and recommended improvements for wet gas scrubber systems at a coal fired power plant in Pennsylvania and a steel mill in Indiana.(2) Demonstrated improved, statistical Life Distribution Analysis in 2019 for projection of steam generator life to 80 years from original design life of 40 years at a nuclear power plant in the southern US.(3) Primary on-site advisor for six months in 2016 on major systems chemistry and corrosion control during Hot Functional Testing (HFT) of a newly constructed nuclear power plant in China. Provided similar service during HFT at a new nuclear plant in the US during 2021 - 22.(4) Acting primary chemist for several months in 2015 at an operating nuclear power plant in eastern US.(5) Expert witness in 2015 – 18 on a large case (estimated at $400 million) involving turbine failure from caustic intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) at a coal-fired power plant in northern US.(6) Mathematical modeling (deterministic and probabilistic modeling) of synergistic impacts of chemistry and thermal-hydraulic parameters on the formation and growth of deposits on heat transfer surfaces (deposit composition, thickness, porosity and tortuosity). Results used by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to support chemistry limits for industry-wide guidelines for fossil power plants.(7) Key role in the evaluation, implementation and optimization of (a) alternate amine chemical treatments for pH, oxygen and ECP control, (b) dispersants and chemical cleaning for deposit control in PWR secondary systems and (c) zinc for corrosion mitigation and radiation field control.(8) Other contributions in the areas of troubleshooting/diagnostics, nuclear fuel, root cause analysis, mentoring/training and industry/manufacturer chemistry guidelines and specifications.

Lead resource in the areas of water chemistry, corrosion control, ion exchange technology, process engineering and laboratory testing and services. Some examples include:• Team leader for the design, construction and initial commercial operation of a $7 million, NRC-licensed chemistry, radiochemistry and metallurgical laboratory. Design-build project completed with no lost time accidents and less than 0.4% rework costs.• Leader of a team of process engineers, production engineers and research and development personnel to improve the performance and reliability of specialty coatings on solar boiler tubes.• Participant in production of industry guidelines for chemical control in nuclear and fossil power plants.• Recognized expert in deposit formation on heat transfer surfaces. Development of mathematical modeling tools for deposits on nuclear fuel. Development and validation of Monte Carlo risk-based deposition and corrosion assessment tool for fossil power plants. • Process engineer and chemist for steam generator chemical cleaning and sludge removal activities at five commercial nuclear power plants.• Lead process engineer to coagulate and remove microscopic radioactive particles from the reactor vessel cavity after underwater segmentation of reactor vessel internals for decommissioning activities. • Project-specific 10CFR50.59 safety evaluations for engineering/design change packages (ECP/DCP) and fuel change packages (FCP) for several customers to support zinc addition programs, pH/lithium control programs, chemical degassing and forced oxidation.

Some examples of work during this period of my career include the following:• Led Due Diligence facility assessment teams and participated on contract transition teams for Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) and waste disposal at the US Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) and Mound Site.• Developed specifications and provided on-site training and consultation for Oxygenated Treatment (OT) at several fossil power plants.• Evaluated deposition in critical components of reactor coolant pumps at three foreign nuclear power plants.• Assisted with plant monitoring and performed a detailed evaluation that provided the technical basis for the first interim consensus water chemistry guidelines established by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for fossil power plants.• Established two Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA) with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop and demonstrate a high-temperature Raman spectroscopy probe for chemical measurements at nuclear plant operating temperatures and pressures.• Sampled and investigated fouling in feedwater flow measurement venturis.• Evaluated potential joint ventures (JV) in vapor compression desalination with a plate-type heat exchanger and conversion of biomass to ethanol.• Performed pilot plant tests on removal of uranium and other radioactive and non-radioactive components from acid waste solutions produced during manufacture of nuclear fuel.

Conducted training courses for nuclear and fossil plant customers, performed laboratory and field testing of alternate pH additives, developed Quality Assurance Programs (QAP) and provided A&C to customers on water treatment, purification and analysis.

Some examples of projects and responsibilities during my first 10 years in the power industry include the following:• Conducted basic and applied research on the solubility of chemicals in steam.• Conducted pilot plant tests at a power plant to evaluate deposition in critical components within the Breeder Reactor Plant (BRP) steam generators.• Directed a sampling and analysis project at an oversees power plant to determine the cause of intergranular stress corrosion cracking.• Provided on-site consultation and analysis at Three Mile Island (TMI) after the 1979 incident.• Taught courses in applied chemistry.• Wrote specifications, directed testing and provided A&C on large pilot plants.• Developed a prototype expert system for process chemistry control.• Developed new analytical chemistry methods and instruments for specialty applications.
