Oversee development of clinical support materials and training courses for physicians, nurses, social workers and outreach staff in project sites launching HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment in Africa and Thailand. Provide oversight, coordination, and evaluation at training activities. Participate in assessment and technical assistance team for collaboration with Clinton Foundation Initiative in the Dominican Republic.

Supervise health education and community liaison staff in TB-related community mobilization activities. Assess training needs, develop educational materials, organize and evaluate training activities for Harlem Hospital house staff (international medical graduates), staff of the National Tuberculosis (TB) Center, the general public, and health professionals in the surrounding community. Direct educational programs for other professional groups, including management teams from other jurisdictions. Participate in clarifying the Center’s vision as a resource for TB education and training at local, regional, and national levels, writing grant proposals, conducting research projects, writing articles, and delivering presentations. Participate in development of Pediatric Consensus Statement on Targeted Tuberculin Skin Testing and Treatment of Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Children and Adolescents with Pediatric Tuberculosis Collaborative Group. Represent the Center in meetings with the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), other National TB Centers, and the CDC.

Funded by HRSA, this was one of three Peer Education and Training sites in the US, dedicated to training HIV-positive peer workers to assist clients to engage and be retained in HIV/AIDS care and treatment. Led training & TA teams that refined curriculum and trained 194 peer workers from 56 organizations, 108 managers and supervisors from 56 organizations, and 28 trainers from 19 organizations. Participated in developing two online toolkits: one for trainers and one for program managers and supervisors. Enrolled nineteen organizations as formal partners to receive technical assistance, while many more benefitted from participating in program network. Co-facilitated national and regional training of trainers courses, and national pilot Spanish language course for HIV-positive peer workers.

Responsible for overseeing all activities related to the Education and Training Unit’s four citywide functions:1) Staff Training: conduct training needs and resources assessment; plan a comprehensive staff development program; plan, direct, administer, and evaluate training for staff of the Bureau and outside agencies; supervise senior public health educators and evaluate their performance; and provide technical assistance in training for other bureaus within the Health Department.2) Professional Education: ensure needs assessment, design, development, and implementation of TB-related training and education for Bureau professionals, as well as those in other public and private sector institutions; produce professional level print-based and web site materials.3) Materials Development: develop programs to communicate TB-related information to the general public and to professionals; oversee design, field tests and production of educational videos, brochures, posters, clinical manuals, staff handbooks, and web site materials.4) Public Education: establish a systematic and sensitive approach to educating employers, workers, parents, students, teachers, administrators, community residents, and health workers about TB control through face-to-face educational opportunities as part of outbreak investigations, general meetings, and health fairs.Participate in coordinating, planning and evaluating bureau activities; developing new strategic initiatives in community partnerships; and representing the Health Department on various committees and at other agencies.

Cochabamba, Bolivia

Planned and supervised implementation of program to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in peri-urban Cochabamba: research (qualitative and quantitative); IEC to sensitize local authorities to maternal and neonatal health problems and solutions, and raise public awareness and concern for prenatal care, safe/clean birth, and contraception; training of doctors, nurses, auxiliaries and community personnel; and technical assistance for management and delivery of clinical services. Mobilized a coalition of non-governmental organizations and the city health department to carry out coordinated educational and service delivery interventions, and through community mobilization – empowerment of pregnant women for more assertive participation during prenatal care visits, and recognition of danger signs during labor and delivery. Mobilized support of traditional healers and other local leadership. Provided oversight and support for Project Warmi, implemented by Save the Children.

Washington, Dc And Harare, Zimbabwe

Led training component for subprojects in Kenya, Malawi, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe; supported sub-project design, monitoring and evaluation; conducted training needs assessments; supported design of curricula and other materials; conducted in-country and regional training; managed training subcontractors; and coordinated technical input/support by Columbia University.

Member of International Training Unit which conducted courses in Management and Training for Primary Health Care/Maternal-Child Health/Family Planning Programs in NY at Columbia’s Health Sciences Campus and in a number of developing countries. Responsible to conduct training needs assessments, write proposals, and organize-conduct-evaluate training. Major emphasis placed on institutionalizing training capacity in collaborating institutions in developing countries; as a result, training teams for PHC/MCH/FP management courses were developed in Nepal, Nigeria and Sudan. Courses emphasized modern management principles, sound epidemiology, and community involvement in designing and implementing PHC/MCH/FP interventions.

Palo Alto, Ca And Sinaloa, Mexico

Village Health Worker, Trainer, Community MobilizerCo-Author of Helping Health Workers LearnAs part of the world-wide movement to use community health workers and promote primary health care (PHC), the Hesperian Foundation played a pioneering role in demonstrating feasibility, developing education and training materials, and advocating for expansion of this new community-based PHC approach, gaining momentum prior to the 1978 WHO Declaration of Alma Ata. Together with David Werner and the local health team, we developed many participatory community-based teaching methods and initiated training-of-trainers workshops with coalitions of community health programs around the world. Co-authored Helping Health Workers Learn; played a major role in developing, writing, and researching other publications such as Where There Is No Doctor and Where There Is No Dentist; reviewed translations and organized publication in Spanish. Working with PHC/community development Project Piaxtla in Ajoya, Sinaloa, Mexico: provided direct PHC services, trained local staff, recruited promotores de salud (community health workers), planned and conducted annual promotores trainings. Helped lead a wide range of community mobilization activities designed to improve health outcomes, such as: improving water supply and sanitation, increasing immunization coverage, promoting oral rehydration, discouraging unsafe birth practices, developing CHILD-to-child methodology and activities (with David Morley), replacing usurious corn lending practices with cooperative corn banks, and supporting equitable land distribution. Working with community-based rehabilitation Project Projimo: arranged training opportunities for local disabled youth to learn production of prosthetics and wheelchairs, and establish a community garden and playground.
