Writer/Editor/Speaker

Breen, Inc.

Independent business writer, editor, and book consultant. Co-author of three critically acclaimed business books. In its April 2014 issue, Inc. magazine named The Responsibility Revolution, which I co-authored with Seventh Generation co-founder Jeffrey Hollender, one of the Ten Best "Green Business" books published over the past 40 years. (See more under Seventh Generation, below.)In June 2013, Crown Business published Brick by Brick: How LEGO Rewrote the Rules of Innovation and Conquered the Global Toy Industry, which I co-authored. I conducted more than 70 interviews and wrote 99 percent of the book. Both Forbes and strategy + business selected Brick by Brick as one of the year's ten best business books. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called Brick by Brick an "entertaining, informative, and fast-paced account of LEGO's rise, fall, and subsequent victory in the marketplace." The Wall Street Journal observed that Brick by Brick's "nuanced" and "well told" turnaround story "may hold as many lessons as those of companies whose chief executives adorn magazine covers."Additional praise for Brick by Brick came from The Financial Times ("holds plenty of lessons for companies pondering how to remain innovative in a fast-changing world"); The Philadelphia Inquirer ("teaches a tough lesson about managing innovation and creativity in business"); and Marketing Week ("if you only read one business book this summer, let it be Brick by Brick").I also co-authored, with the strategist and London Business School professor Gary Hamel, The Future of Management (Harvard Business Press). USA Today described Future as "bursting with ideas and suggestions for managers;" Business Week declared it "a crusading call for radical changes in managing organizations;" while The [London] Observer called it "an essential and timely manifesto." The editors of Amazon.com voted The Future of Management the year's Best Business Book.

And I co-authored, with Hollender, The Responsibility Revolution: How the Next Generation of Businesses Will Win, published by Jossey-Bass in March 2010. In its April 2014 issue, Inc. magazine selected The Responsibility Revolution as one of its Ten Best Business Books for Going Green. The Responsibility Revolution was an 800-CEO-Read best-seller. Calling the book "rich with people and practices worth emulating," Inc. gave The Responsibility Revolution a 9 (out of 10) rating, asserting that it delivers "unusually detailed and thoughtful profiles." CNBC.com declared that the book "gives key pointers on the way leadership is set to change." And the sustainable business journal TriplePundit.com called Responsibility "one of the best books on sustainable business."
