I am one of Canada's leading architects, internationally recognized as a planetarium and observatory design specialist. Over four decades, I have designed 750 buildings, in Canada and abroad, specializing in public buildings in the cultural, educational, municipal, health, safety and justice sectors. After receiving a music major arts degree from the University of Alberta, I went on to study architecture at the University of British Columbia. There, I graduated with distinction in 1978, winning the Alpha Rho Chi Gold Medal. After working with a number of architectural firms, including Arthur Erickson Architects and Peter Cardew Architects, I set up my own practice in Calgary, joining forces with Kasian in 2001. I combine my extensive design experience with an inclusive and direct leadership style. I listen. I research. I care. I am a strong proponent of understanding my clients' needs and aspirations, both business and personal, before embarking on design solutions. To me, function, cost and beauty are not mutually exclusive; great design is made by embracing all three and driving to a solution that exceeds - significantly exceeds - my clients' expectations.In May 2021, I was awarded the Tom Sutherland Award, one bestowed annually by the Alberta Association of Architects to one architect who exemplifies a lifetime of achievement in the profession and in the community. My work has been published extensively, and much of it has been awarded prestigiously including a Governor General’s Award for Architecture, AIA Justice Facilities Award, Canadian Architect Award of Excellence, City of Calgary Mayor's Urban Design Awards and several AAA Awards of Excellence. In my professional volunteer work, I have served as President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, editor of the RAIC Canadian Handbook of Practice, member of the Calgary Planning Commission, member of the Canadian Architect Awards jury, member of the Consulting Architects of Alberta, and chair of the Calgary Urban Design Review Panel. At the community level, I have chaired the Calgary Downtown Association and Calgary Science Centre Society, and served on the boards of the Calgary Region Arts Foundation, Calgary Economic Development, and the University of Calgary Senate. I currently sit on the board of the Honens International Piano Competition and the Alberta World Expo 2030 Committee, and chair the Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board.I addition, I bring expertise to the areas of master planning, facilities programming, and expert witness services.
