As a Professional Engineer and Estimator, I started my career as an HVAC designer in a Consulting Engineering firm. There I learned the applications required to design HVAC systems and create plans and specifications for all types of projects, Commercial, Industrial, Institutional and Residential. This gave me a good background and knowledge in what is required to design a project.After that I was retained by an HVAC and Plumbing Contractor to do design/build projects, where I meet with owners and developers to discuss their requirements, take these requirements and provide a scope and value for the project. This was an eye opener for me as I learned that what I was doing as a consultant was not the way things were built. Working with the trade’s people I learned that there were ways to produce systems that were more economical without effecting the owner’s requirements at a lower cost.This led me to my current employment as an estimator. Sure most anyone can be taught to do quantity take off, get vendor quotes and put together an estimate. My feelings are that one has to first look at the project and determine where cost can be saved, that’s where Value Engineering is my specialty. If you can see cost reductions in the overall project, then these suggestions can be passed on to the General Contractor to help them maintain a budget and reduce the cost without actually changing the requirements the engineer set forth. Although not all of this VE will be accepted by the engineer of record, you can provide a shopping list and there will be a give and take. Thus you are not offending the engineer, nor taking away from the project. With these practices and thirty-five years of experience, this has been one of my abilites to be successful in what I do.
