• Provided independent technology and strategic consulting services to vendors in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries. Clients included Ericsson, BellSouth, Advance Micro Devices, Motorola, Mellon Ventures, and Scientific Generics • Served as an independent board director of two wireless data startups, Wynd Data Systems and Melard Technologies. • Responsible for the US launch of portable mobile data products that operated over the Mobitex wireless data network being deployed by RAM Mobile Data, later acquired by BellSouth• Convinced management to shift out of vertical industrial markets into the portable computer space• Bootstrapped and managed a skunk works project with a tiny Canadian startup called Research in Motion to launch the world’s first wireless email service. This ultimately evolved into the BlackBerry• Co-founded the Portable Computer and Communications Association (PCCA)

• Self-funded startup developing spread spectrum wireless LAN products for Apple Computers, years before the emergence of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11). Got as far as a working prototype and landed a corporate distribution partner but were unable to raise expansion financing.• Researched and authored a multi-client study entitled “Wireless Data Networks: Emerging markets and market opportunities” a definitive analysis of the state-of-the-art wireless data technology in the US.

• Venture capital-backed developer of hand-held, modular, rugged wireless workstations • Developed sales and marketing channels as well as independent software vendor relationships in the telecom, field engineering, transportation, utility and public safety markets• Evangelized the product category running the full gamut of speaking at PC industry trade shows to lecturing at the FBI Academy. Associate member International Association of Chiefs of Police.

• Responsible for marketing, sales, and client account management for the US technology arm of this international consulting firm. Carried a $1M annual sales quota, hit it both years.• Focused proactive marketing efforts on consumer information services and emerging unlicensed wireless data technologies. New clients I brought to the firm included General Instrument, Schlumberger, the American Stock Exchange, NYNEX, JC Penney, PacTel Cellular, A.C. Nielsen, Trintex (progenitor to Prodigy) and the Vertical Group (a venture capital firm).• Got a wonderful education on cold calling, which left me with lasting respect for sales professionals

• Recruited to build an engineering team that developed the Cable TV industry’s first digital set top box with integrated cable modem. Built and managed a group of 11 hardware and software engineers. • Developed a M6800 based bit mapped consumer graphics terminal that supported home banking, home shopping, electronic newspapers, and multi-player games. The latter included real-time 3D perspective scene generation that allowed subscribers to engage in cross network action games.• Supported major cable customers including Cox, Cablevision, Comcast, Rogers, United, and others in their metropolitan franchise bids. Bid email as part of basic service in Sacramento, 1983.• Lead inventor on three network access control patents

• Developed telecommunications protocols and terminal specifications for first generation home banking, home shopping, electronic yellow pages, and electronic newspaper systems. This used 2400 baud modems back before first IMB PC shipped and when the internet was a gleam in Gore’s eye.• Provided technical liaison for AT&T/Knight-Ridder Newspapers consumer trials• Served as AT&T representative to ANSI and CCIT standards committees developing international Videotex protocol standards that later become NAPLPS, the standard used by Prodigy and others• Lead inventor on four graphics communications patents, one of which underlies the VGA standard
