In my senior year as an undergrad studying economics, I completed a capstone economic research paper to examine whether increasing student-loan debt in America is a causal factor in the increasing amount of time it is taking for individuals to get married. I hypothesized that young adults are putting marriage off until later in life due to increasing indebtedness. I hypothesized that young adults are putting marriage off until later in life due to increasing indebtedness. I found this topic extremely relevant as a large literature establishes a variety of benefits conferred by marriage including health and financial benefits to those directly involved and socially desirable outcomes for children born with and reared by two parents. In my research, leveraged STATA coding software and data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 to develop a propensity score matching model to examine this relationship. My findings were not statistically significant, so I could not include causality. However, there still did appear to be an economic relationship between the two variables, and I believe my project was subject to positive bias as a result of omitted variables (I did not have access to what would have been a more comprehensive data set as an undergraduate economics student, which would likely have provided the variables missing from my model).
