On Friday 7th July I retired from the BBA to resume my position as a consultant and to be able to spend more time on academic pursuits. Working at the BBA was a fantastic opportunity, supporting the organisation's ambition to raise standards and confidence in the industry. Working with many businesses in the supply chain, entrepreneurs and major manufacturers alike, has been a privilege. I leave a strengthened team, well placed for the future. My knowledge base is centred in the construction industry, and my outlook is to safe outcomes of work method and of as-built assets. I will be seeking to work with senior management teams either to address a particularly complex piece of project work, or unravel problems they recognise in their business or project. If you have something tricky to do, be it an element of design, construction or business change, I have a broad wealth of experience and would be glad to help.

Director - Bill Hewlett Associates LtdBill Hewlett Associates Ltd Apr 2020 - PresentKent, England, United KingdomOn stepping down from Costain, after 40 years in the industry, I set up as an independent consultant, offering expertise and insight to corporates and major projects. This activity was suspended while I was at BBA (2021-2023), but is now re-opened, richer for the insights gained. Work channels include non-Exec work, team mentoring, professional development, legal support, peer review, and leading teams within projects to innovate or, if needed, to work through difficult engineering challenges. My prime focus is on safety in the built environment, both safety of work activity, also of as-built assets. Alongside, I maintain my professional and academic engagements, chairing CROSS (Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety, a group supported by the ICE, IStructE and HSE), as a Visiting Professor at Cardiff University Business School, and leading the Philosophy and Engineering course in the the Leading Major Programmes degree at Edinburgh University.

Technical DirectorThe British Board Of Agrément Jan 2021 - Jul 2023London, England, United KingdomMy role at BBA was to lead the technical strategy, and within that, the Technical Excellence team. During a period of significant change at BBA, my prime deliverable was to ensure technical excellence while we developed our offering and transform to a more systematic and customer centric approach. The role was strongly externally facing, engaging with and supporting the industry as it rebuilds public confidence, and learning from that so that BBA can develop itself to play the part that society needs.
