I started my working career as a footwear mechanic in Sargood Son & Ewen in Dunedin, after a few years, I ended up in charge of all the maintenance section of the factory. This is where my scaffolding life started in the shoe factory workshop, where I made a small scaffolding tressel for one of the workers, then made another one to put on display in the local paint shop. We called the tressel (Mini Scaffolding), and from there we grew from Mini in 1972 to United Scaffolding in 1985. After a while, I developed the business from one branch to five branches across the South Island employing 95 full-time staff. My growth strategy was to mainly target the large industrial companies, with the long-term view of setting up a preferred scaffolding contractor Status. I was always aware that my staff were the key to my success; my clients Knew that we could be trusted to deliver the best possible service with safety first.In November 2012, I sold the business to a large Global Corporate called WACO International based in South Africa which operates in 4 continents, 12 countries and over 100 locations, and I retired from the industry in March 2020, still keeping one eye on my old company as it changes into the next generation of corporate leadership. Now my wife and I are living the dream on our property we developed over the past 16 years with the help from our landscape architect and staff to transform the property from a hay paddock to a beautiful lifestyle property nestled below the Pisa Mountain Range and lake Dunstan on the 45th Parallel close to Wanaka in the South Island of NZ. Our property is called POPLAR ESTATE.We have two boutique vineyards growing Pinot Noir & Chardonnay grapes , the property has been setup for functions and weddings in our heritage orchard were we have some lovely commissioned stainless steel artwork pieces mounted on shist walls in amongst native plantings, where people can relax and enjoy a glass or two of Pinot and listen to the bird life. All in all, we still live a very active exciting life.
