It all started with a ship and a champagne bottle for William Loughran. Little did he realize his simple idea would give rise to a successful business.Mr. Loughran, of Sea Girt, was recently recognized for his 1960’s invention of the Christening Bottle, a champagne shaped glass bottle that is easily — and safely — breakable to use for the traditional christening of boats for good luck.The product was added to the Inventors and Innovators exhibit at the Manalapan Library headquarters by the Monmouth County Archives, a division of the Office of the Monmouth County Clerk.The idea was born over 50 years ago when Mr. Loughran, founder of Loughran’s Shore Manufacturing Company in Manasquan, was attending the christening of a friend’s new boat in Bay Head. When it came time to break the champagne bottle, the glass would not give. This gave him the idea to create a bottle that would break easily, but remain safe when shattered.Mr. Loughran communicated with Owens-Illinois, the world’s leading glass bottle manufacturer, and came up with a bottled filled with a fizzing foam to act like champagne when the bottle burst. A net was added to wrap the bottle to capture the shattered glass and the neck of the bottle was laced with ribbon. He began selling his new product from his father’s garage at 20-years-old and since then it has flourished.
