After several years of working in the newspaper industry as a reporter, photographer, graphics editor, copy editor/page designer, and opinion page editor, I shifted my emphasis to teaching and practicing mass communication at the collegiate level. Today I teach students the skills and concepts they need to succeed in journalism, strategic communication, and public advocacy careers. I still keep a hand in the practice through creative service projects for nonprofit service organizations and strategic communications within my university. My research and creative activities are focused on understanding and supporting small-market and niche news media as well as the communication strategies of local and regional nonprofit/public agencies.Specialties: media ethics, community-level journalism and strategic communication, managing audience feedback across all channels, small-team management, print and online publication design, community-media relations, FOI/Sunshine Law access and compliance, citizen engagement.
