Bill Schmalzer has been active in the operations and maintenance of power plants since 1982. He began his career as a Machinist's Mate in the U. S. Navy, and was Engine Room Supervisor on board the ammunition/logistics ship USS Flint (AE-32), which supported the USS Independence (CV-62) Battle Group during the Persian Gulf War. As analyst for Forecast International's Industrial & Marine Turbine Forecast, Bill's primary focus is on gas turbine engines used for electrical generation, mechanical load drive duty, and surface transportation – and on large steam turbine machines used in combined-cycle installations.From 1991-1995 Bill was an operating engineer for Bechtel Power Corporation at the 660 MW Doswell Combined Cycle Facility in Ashland, Virginia, where he was instrumental in the construction, commissioning and commercial operation of four Siemens V84.2 gas turbine generators, Nooter HRSGs, two ABB steam turbine generators, and related auxiliary systems.In related work, Bill served as a consultant to Union Camp Paper during the installation and start-up of its first 48-MW Westinghouse W-251B12-based cogeneration plant at the Franklin (Virginia) paper mill in 1996. Bill was also Operations Manager for Bridgeport Energy's 540 MW combined-cycle power plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1997-2000, taking the plant through construction and successful commercial operation.
