In June 2010 I set up my own one-man PR business where I give a personalised, high-level service to clients in sectors where I have expertise and can add value. Current sectors include legal, accountancy, finance (foreign exchange), motor, corporate travel, food and drink, waste management and charity. I also manage Scottish PR for the UK's biggest pro-am golf tournament, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a client I've been involved with since 2002. I tend to work with SMEs/charities as well as Scottish operations of UK/international firms which need PR support and are looking for a cost effective, yet high level service. Unlike the model used by a lot of PR agencies where less-experienced staff are often brought in to service an account, I do everything for my clients to ensure they have senior input across all aspects of their PR management.

It was my privilege to be a voluntary member of the Trustee Board for this charity, aimed at supporting children and young people with disabilities or from excluded backgrounds. I advised the board on PR issues, fund-raising, fudning applications, and other operational activities, The charity was set up by Lady (Jill) Kirkwood who was frustrated at the amount of money and resources that some charities spent on their overhead costs. She launched the Daisy Chain Trust in 2000 with the pledge of donating virtually all funds raised to its intended beneficiaries. I'm proud that in my circa 14 years with the charity that we delivered on this aim.

From 1998 I served as a Director of Catchline Communications which merged with the Big Partnership in 2005 and overnight became Scotland's largest PR agency. In 2005 I was appointed head of Big's Edinburgh office and in the years that followed the team grew from seven to 12 people. The operation included a flourishing consumer team which delivered excellent results for a range of clients, focused strongly - but not exclusively - in the drinks sector. The corporate team which I led worked across a number of sectors including engineering, property, professional services, legal, sport and trade bodies. It was a great experience and I've worked with some great professionals and brilliant people but after 12 years it was time for a change.

It was a tough job but someone had to do it... Seriously though, I don't think I could have had a better challenge for my first PR role. I learned a lot and certainly gained a lot of experience, especially in crisis management!

My first job in the UK was with Northsound Radio, Aberdeen where I lived the dream as a radio presenter, reaching out to the northeast of Scotland. The music was raw, radio was exciting and life was carefree! I then spent a year doing a similar role with the SABC in Durban, South Africa. I presented a number of weekly radio programmes, worked as a radio journalist and also spent a lot of time surfing... and then it was time to grow up :-(
