My career has included varied senior leadership roles in strategic, operational and political domains often involving high level diplomacy and international engagement, drawing on my ability to engage widely, build trusted networks and influence outcomes of national and international importance.My last role was Head of Australian Defence Staff in The United Kingdom as the principal agent for Australia's in country engagement with the UK, Dutch and Irish Defence Force. This included responsibilities for all material, scientific and intelligence engagement and for supporting ADF personnel posted in the UK and Netherlands. During the MH17 Malaysian Airlines disaster, I took a lead role in the strategic coordination of Australia’s cooperation with the Netherlands Defence Force and other agencies during the search and recovery period. Earlier, I was the Deputy Head of Cadet, Reserve and Employer Support Division (2010-12), Commander International Stabilisation Force, Timor Leste (2009) and Director General Estate Companion Review, Defence Infrastructure Division (2007-8). After retiring from the ADF in 2016, I am now involved in a portfolio of consulting engagements (Phare Consulting), international advisory, academia, directorships and reserve work.
