Bill grew up in the dawn of the personal computing era of the 1980s. He learned to program in BASIC by staying up all night writing games on a Commodore 64 with no hard drive or disk drive... and starting over every time the power flickered. Bill was also single-handedly responsible for the looping "BILL WAS HERE" message found on all Radio Shack computers in the southeastern US at that time. And by 8th grade, he had created the first matchmaking program for his middle school, albeit with an algorithm that slightly favored him and his friends.Bill was formally educated at the University of Central Florida, graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering in 1994. During his time at UCF, he interned at NASA developing software for Space Shuttle launch systems and at the US Department of Agriculture developing control systems for greenhouses. In 1995, Bill began his professional career as a Software Engineer in the aerospace industry, writing software to support Shuttle and rocket launches along the Eastern Range. He developed the first C++ software to be certified on the Eastern Range and played a key role in defining its C++ coding standards. He also worked on the first Java development project at Kennedy Space Center used for end-to-end data transmission and system status displays. In June 1997, Bill helped usher in the dot-com era by founding Microburst Technologies, Inc. (www.uburst.com). Microburst's flagship product, "uShop," was the internet's first Java-based e-commerce system. As described by Chat GPT:"uShop provided businesses with an easy-to-use platform for setting up online stores and processing transactions. It gained popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s as e-commerce was becoming more prevalent. Bill Weiner's work with uShop contributed to the growth of online retail during that time."Bill continues to develop various web-based products for Microburst today, many of which are available for free to schools and non-profit organizations and have helped them raise over $1 million. In March 2001, Bill had the opportunity to join another startup called "e-Security" which specialized in enterprise-level cybersecurity. Over the next 20+ years, Bill played a crucial role in developing an industry-leading cybersecurity platform, now used by companies and agencies worldwide to protect against ever-present cybersecurity threats."e-Security" has since been acquired by multiple companies and is now owned by OpenText, where Bill continues to work with cutting-edge technologies and the new frontier of AI.
