With 40 years of experience in law, finance, academia, and energy, I create and invest in companies transforming the world with a view to sustainability. I am a licensed attorney and arbitrator with a JD from Duke University and earned dual BS degrees in Biology (molecular focus) and Political Science (personal rights focus) from MIT.At New Waters, we champion “economic sustainability,” embracing it as a holistic and robust approach that surpasses traditional triple bottom line models. My contributions stem from four areas of my career: • Legal: As an associate at Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine—founded by the creator of the OSS, the precursor to the CIA—and later a partner at Sidley Austin, I structured large-scale transactions in mergers and acquisitions, project financing, leveraged buyouts, and securities issuances. • Financial: At Morgan Stanley, AIG, and Goldman Sachs, I focused on portfolio construction, asset allocation, global macro strategies, and risk management, including co-heading Morgan Stanley’s global listed derivatives business. • Academic: Over six years at Duke University, I taught courses such as Equity Valuation and Advanced Financial Statement Analysis, Fixed Income Markets and Advanced Quantitative Analysis, Structuring Venture Capital and Private Equity, and Mergers and Acquisitions, mentoring the next generation of financial leaders. • Innovation: As a co-founder of 8 Rivers Capital and NET Power, I pioneered advancements in clean hydrogen, CO₂ capture, and clean power solutions. These ventures achieved significant milestones, with NET Power going public and 8 Rivers being acquired by SK.At New Waters, our mission extends beyond financial success; we aim to contribute to a market where sustainable change is the norm. Additionally, I serve as a strategic advisor at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, supporting breakthroughs in renewable energy technologies.
