About Bill C Martin

My key business specialisms, developed over the past 4 decades, are:► Communication► Marketing► Sales► AS A MUSICIANBeginning as a professional musician I learned about performance and how to engage my audience. I now apply this to sales. I learned what effective groups/teams looked like and how to create them. In a crowded marketplace I learned the importance of developing a distinctive, compelling brand.► IN PUBLISHING & PUBLIC SPEAKINGI developed my communication skills while working for a national newspaper, and in my own performing and journalism. Regular, high-profile public speaking activities also contributed, from presenting and selling to groups of professionals at national events, to addressing MPs at the Houses of Parliament. It has also informed my professional face-to-face and non-verbal communication with my retail customers.► TEACHING & TRAINING (education & business sectors)I came to understand how people learn and change, what motivates them and what gets in the way. In a rapidly changing world I learned the importance of having clear goals and constantly questioning what I'm doing, why and how. Instead of focussing only on the detail I have made a point of regularly referring to the bigger picture. In my work running training and consultancy businesses, initially in the late-80s and then in the 2010s, I learned how to sell and how to retain customers and motivate them to take their businesses to the next level.► MUSIC INDUSTRYI deepened my sales and marketing skills, while working in the music industry from the mid-90s to 2012. I was part of a team selling music-related business opportunities, training and support materials across the UK. I created high-ticket sales opportunities by developing relationships with high-profile education clients, including conservatoires and schools.► BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHERAll this learning, coupled with CPD from the Institute of Consulting, has given me an analytical, strategic approach and broad insight, which I bring to my work managing and growing a sales territory at The House of Sarunds and as non-exec director at Apothecary 87.

Bill C Martin Work Experience Details
  • House Of Sarunds
    Territory Manager
House Of Sarunds Jul 2015 - Present
North-East Coast From North Lincolnshire To Fife
Managing a large sales area, covering North Lincolnshire to Fife, which I have now grown to a value of more than £1,000,000, by helping my customers grow their businesses, using some astonishing products from Sarunds with some innovative but proven strategies of my own.NATASHA’S LAW EXPERTISEFrom 1 October 2021, Natasha’s Law required my retail clients, who bought our premium loose chocolates/confectionery and created pre-packed-for-direct-sale (PPDS) packs, to create complex, time-consuming and often risky ingredients and allergens labels for PPDS packs. To speed up the process and help reduce their risk and stress, I built a regularly updated database of the latest ingredients, allergens and nutritional information we get from our manufacturers, for all of Sarunds’ current bulk confectionery. This has enabled our customers to create mandatory labels and signs when required, quickly and more easily, using any of around 650 bulk confectionery items we sell.SPECIALISM IN LOOSE CHOCOLATESThrough continual study and learning from some of the most talented people on the planet, I love developing my expertise and knowledge around loose chocolates. I’ve used this to help my clients take their loose chocolate business to the next level. Combining this with a consultative sales approach, I’ve helped many of my customers significantly build their turnover and profitability.A key strategy is to help them create 'wow' for their own customers. And the beauty for my clients with physical retail shops is that the supermarkets and online retailers, who offer mostly a passive retail experience, can't compete with this. So it can really help retailers to grow distinctive brands that attract not just customers but also fans. At a time when physical retail rarely excites customers, a superbly presented loose chocolate shop can create some real excitement that can engage all the senses. Talk to me if you're a chocolate and confectionery retailer who wants to go for that 'wow!'
  • House Of Sarunds
    New Business Development Manager
House Of Sarunds Jan 2015 - Jul 2015
    Doncaster, United Kingdom
I took a leading role to identify new business opportunities and partnerships while running and growing a large sales territory. My approach was to get to know my customers and their businesses well enough so that we can identify opportunities to increase their profitability, through Sarunds' products and service. In this way I have enabled existing accounts doing low levels of business to grow and have enabled larger accounts to grow further. My customers - almost all from the independent retail sector - include card shops, chemists, chocolate shops, chocolatiers, coffee/tea shops, confectionery/tobacconist/newspaper shops, convenience shops, delis, farm shops, florists, garden centres, general stores, gift shops, hamper companies, internet companies, off licences, post offices stately homes and tourist locations. I'm very happy to hear from organisations looking for beautiful corporate gifts - personalised or branded. And I'm always delighted to hear from any existing or new UK retailer - from Chesterfield to Northumberland - looking to add some 'wow' to their retail offering with our top quality confectionery and deli products and acclaimed service.
  • House Of Sarunds

Following a period of consultancy in 2013, focussing on communication, sales and marketing for the UK's No1 distributor of premium British and continental chocolates and confectionery, I accepted the position leading the part of its sales team that serves independent retailers, across the UK.With my broad experience in marketing, sales and communication, spanning several industries, the company's management team valued the new insights I was able to bring during my consultancy. In taking on this position I put some of my thinking into action to help propel this already successful company to the next level.

    Apothecary 87 Ltd Nov 2013 - Present

We launched Apothecary 87 Ltd in November 2013 to change the face of men's grooming. It has become a very successful, steadily growing manufacturer of men's premium personal grooming and lifestyle products, selling to end-users, retailers and distributors in more than 130 countries. The core strategy has been to find ways to turn customers into fans. We've had considerable success with this and have developed a very strong brand. During its start-up phase I provided guidance on business strategy and on sales and marketing for this fast growing creator of fine men's grooming products, which the company implemented and continues to build on, with immense success.Within its first two months Apothecary 87's innovative hand-blended products - created from the very best ingredients - were already attracting interest from the fashion and barbering world. It continues to be hailed across the industry and across the world as the men's personal grooming products brand to watch. We have involved top fashion models - bearded, moustached and clean-shaven - to help us in some very successful online marketing activities. As a result our customers range from the public to online fashion retailers and specialist barbershops across the continents. In 2019 we launched our first high-quality barber shop within our Doncaster UK premises. Providing continual professional development for our barbers has helped maintain the number of 5-star reviews from clients. In 2021 we launched our second barber shop, in Kelham Island, Sheffield, with the capacity for 6 barbers and a coffee shop selling high-end coffee on-site. We use Apothecary 87's products during the treatments our barbers offer and we then retail them to our clients. We now have customers and fans of the brand in more than 130 countries that we ship to.
