Spam control programming, related system tinkering, and support. Switched to part-time May 2019

Key roles & achievements: Sole customization developer (Perl) & 3rd-level tech support for RequestTracker (RT) support ticket system. Architect & primary builder of a redesigned highly-resilient, attack-resistant DNS infrastructure for hundreds of zones (including registered domains, their subdomains, reverse zones for allocated IP space, and reverse zones for RFC1918 IP space used in the environment.) Planned, deployed, and supported the earliest OpenNebula Cloud environments for CipherSpace, including the 1st production environment exposed to customers. OpenNebula is now the central technology enabling CipherSpace's strategic product offerings. Primary manager for multiple CommuniGate Pro (unified communications system) environments, including designing and deploying a custom spam-filtering solution deployed to all CGP installations. Planned and executed the migration of the business-customer production CGP system, handling corporate email for thousands of users in scores of domains, from a single machine in the US to a redundant cluster in Switzerland with only a few minutes of user-visible downtime.

Supported 50-150 mixed Unix hosts: Solaris (v. 2.6-10,) Tru64 (4.0f/g) and Linux (multiple distributions.) Technical leader, toolsmith, and security guru for Unix admins. Built and ran Volkswagen of America external mail/spam filtering gateways. Maintained customized system images for deployment of new systems. Built and supported shared infrastructure and Unix elements for Unix/Windows disaster recovery environment. Member of the Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) for VW and gedas/T-Systems. Advised other Americas Region Unix teams on security practices and Sendmail configuration. Technical consultant to Security team. Helped support custom RT system for asset tracking and operational support ticketing. Provided sole support for Cacti system monitoring tool. Managed NFS and security configuration of EMC Celerra NAS. Assisted in transition of all VWoA Unix support to T-Systems Mexico, March 2008.

See the description for my job at T-Systems for full details. I joined gedas (a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG) in 2001 as a Unix System Administrator and continued in that role (with a new and less expressive title) after the 2007 acquisition of gedas by T-Systems (a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary.)

Managed the Policy Administration Services program, which provided outsourced abuse desk service to Internet service providers.

Provided training on network abuse issues and online investigation methods to external customers. Created software tools to meet the needs of the PAS abuse desk outsourcing operation. Advised PAS clients and staff on operational issues and on the handling of difficult cases.

Responsible for support of the DaimlerChrysler Extranet, a complex of webservers, proxies, firewalls, database connections, and network access systems linking DCX and their business partners. Provided 2nd and 3rd level support for end users and IT staff of business partners using the Extranet. Created support documentation for 1st-level and off-hours support staff. Mentored junior support specialists.

One of a team of 12 administrators providing 24x7 2nd level support for all non-mainframe, non-Novell server systems at Chrysler, primarily Solaris and AIX with some older Unix-based and NT 4.0 systems. Approximately 600 machines located around the world ranging from 'pizza-box' servers to IBM SP/2 and Sun Enterprise 10000 machines. Responsible for problem analysis, routine OS changes, and coordinating hardware service. During this period we also provided much of the support for the DCX Extranet prior to the formation of a dedicated support team.

Performed all IT planning, administrative, and support duties for Mac and Windows desktops, printers, and both onsite and colocated Linux servers. Acted as internal consultant to the owner/publisher on all information systems issues, and specified all corporate computing and data communications purchases. Primary architect and webmaster for all online magazine editions and other Finan-hosted sites. Established coding standards for all sites. Extensive Perl CGI programming and database web publishing. Advised advertising salespeople on how and what to sell as ad space on the websites. Administered in-house and co-located Linux servers. Ran multiple announcement/newsletter mailing lists as adjuncts to the company websites and magazines.

Independent consulting, working primarily with small businesses providing strategic analysis for IT issues, system administration, systems integration planning, and technical support during the 1990's. Business largely dormant 1999-present, due primarily to the requirements of my other employment.
