Every company, regardless of market, is a potential target for cybercrime, whether from external or internal threats. Companies have a duty to safeguard their customer’s data and their proprietary intellectual property and to take basic steps to ensure that a single email or thumb drive does not force the business to close forever. Forethought and innovation in developing and delivering solutions are core values where I work. In cybersecurity, this means peering over the horizon today to identify, anticipate, and neutralize threats we may face tomorrow. Good planning combined with thoughtful implementation can pay significant dividends in the future, both in cost savings as well as information security. But it is important to realize that there is no silver bullet, nor is there a single solution that works for everyone. You have to continually assess your risk, realistically mitigate that risk, and then reevaluate. It’s a never-ending process, as I have learned during my 20-plus years working in information security. The never-ending challenge that information security presents could be viewed as a drawback to some. For me, I love that often there’s no one right answer. A single problem can often be approached from several angles, each with its own pros and cons. Tailoring a creative solution for a problem can be quite satisfying. I have also learned that in information security and information services more broadly, no matter how much you think you know about a subject, there’s always something to be learned, some new approach to try. Never be afraid to ask questions, and never ever ignore recommendations from subordinates. There’s no shame in getting someone else to show you how you can improve, even—maybe especially—in management positions. Change is inevitable; growth is optional.
