Bill is an independent consultant assisting companies innovate in the areas of power electronics, electrical machines, industrial drives, engineering management, product development, portfolio management, organisational development, culture change, university liaison and skills.Bill has over 40 years experience in Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).Bill remains active across the Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) sector. Bill Chaired the BIS “UK National Power Electronics Strategy” Group whose pivotal report was published in 2011. He chaired the EPSRC “Underpinning Power Electronics” Panel 2012, which led directly to the EPSRC Power Electronics Centre funded with £44m from EPSRC plus £19m from Innovate UK.Bill is Chairman of the IET PEMD Technical and Professional Network, providing focus for a vibrant community, and is part of the leadership team of PowerelectronicsUK with particular responsibility for skills.He has more than 70 publications to his name. He is the editing author of “The Control Techniques Drives and Controls Handbook” (IET 2009) and co-author of “Electric Motors and Drives – Fundamentals, Types and Applications” (Newnes 2013). He has chaired several International Conferences in the field of Motors and Drives including PEMD (2010 and 2012). He has strong links with many UK and international Universities. He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Innovation at Bristol University and a Visiting Professor at Newcastle University. He sits on EPSRC steering groups for both the UK Power Electronics Centre and the Gallium Nitride on Silicon project. A member of the Company's Divisional Boards, contributing to the strategy of the entire business. In 1994, appointed Technical Director, with responsibility for all engineering activities across the company. Control Techniques was founded in 1973 and experienced rapid growth, based on flexible and creative product designs, and excellent customer service. By 1990, sales were a little over £25M based on products designed by a small but dynamic team of 12 Engineers. Demand for more products (functionality and power range), demanded a structured design approach. The maturing of the core technologies also meant that product reliability was rapidly becoming a major customer focus.At Emerson – Control Techniques his innovative engineering team powered company growth from sales of <£25M to over £300M. To achieve this he developed a world class product development team across 5 international sites with an global reputation for technology leadership based on innovation, reliability and cost base.Bill was involved in establishing design and procurement procedures for multiple, manufacturing locations (UK, China [in-house and sub-contract], USA, and Romania) as well as systems design work in 66 countries. He was appointed to the Corporate Technology Council of Emerson in 1999. He was a winner of the Emerson Technology Award in 2004 and a runner up in the following year.As part of his passion in relation to the development of engineering skills, Bill, formalised the graduate training programme within Emerson – Control Techniques, gaining accreditation by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Note: In 2017 Control Techniques was sold to Nidec and was renamed Nidec-Control Techniques.

Chief EngineerNei / Rolls-Royce Control Systems 1985 - 1990Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, U.K.(a) 1985 - Chief Engineer - Industrial ControlsThis position carried the responsibility, as part of the Senior Management team, to formulate and implement the company Engineering Strategy.I had specific responsibility for Design and Development, responsible for over 50 qualified Engineers.In four years, turnover grew on average by 27% with static staff numbers. I was involved in licensing and consortium agreements with leading American, Japanese and German companies to further strengthen the company's market position. Throughout this period much work was done to develop business in the field of rail traction. This was achieved through in-house product development of static auxiliary power supplies and later through a joint venture. I played a key role in the formation of NEI-Mitsubishi Electric Traction Company Ltd, which was set up to supply complete electrical equipment's to the European market.(b) 1989 - Chief Engineer - C & I SystemsI was appointed Chief Engineer of C & I Systems, in which my responsibilities were broadened from power electronic equipment to also embrace computing (safety critical control systems in nuclear and conventional power systems), control and instrumentation systems (including nucleonics) for power generation and other process industries (notably steel, and petrochemicals) a well as Defence. High Integrity was a requirement common to all equipment designed and manufactured. Consequently much priority was given to design for integrity. Engineering procedures compliant with and approved to BS5750 Pt 1 (ISO 9001), BS5882, AQAP1 and AQAP13 were introduced under my supervision. I was responsible for over 150 qualified Engineers. I was a member of Rolls-Royce group working parties on power electronics, control and instrumentation, electromagnetic compatibility and condition monitoring

Project Manager - Ac Drive DevelopmentNei / Rolls Royce Control Systems 1983 - 1985Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, U.K.(a) 1983 - Senior Design Engineer (Industrial Controls Division) Appointed to lead the development of large AC Variable Speed Drives, new to the company. Undertook two major projects whilst in this position. • 2-off 2MW, 3.3kV Converter-Fed Synchronous Machine drives for Power Station Boiler ID Fans. This work, which embraced several novel and technically challenging features, was completed within 6 months and within budget. • 2-off 2MW, 11kV Static Kramer Drive systems for the Cement Industry. Completed within 9 months and within budget.Both Projects employed Digital Control Electronics, developed from scratch on the projects.(b) 1984 - Project Manager - AC Drive Development This new position was created to technically control and project manage the company's AC drive development programme. The principal undertaking in this position was to establish standardised power electronic and control “blocks” to speed all phases of the tendering and delivery process and to ensure good reliability. Within this process "Field Orientation" based control was introduced to the company.
