Bill is a thought leader and practitioner in the user-centered design of medical products, founding consultancy Bridge Design in San Francisco in 1992 working with global clients ranging from startups to Fortune 50, garnering multiple industry design awards before selling to VCs in 2015.As well as leading design teams on diagnostic and therapeutic devices across many areas of medical practice his work also pioneered in digital health. He is a seasoned user researcher observing 100s of procedures and interviewing ~1000 medical professionals and patients to help clients define customer-satisfying and market share-winning products.Bill has spoken extensively at conferences, venture accelerators, and executive immersions, and has written for industry media. He has been a guest lecturer at UC Berkeley, and Stanford University, and is currently teaching a module on the Healthcare + Design course at the Royal College of Art, and Imperial College Surgery Dept in London. He chaired the IDSA National Medical Conference in 2016He served as Venture Advisory Board Member for Kimberly-Clark, and on the Editorial Advisory Board of publication Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry, who also named him one of "100 Notable People" in the device industry. Bill owns multiple patents and is a graduate of the joint RCA/Imperial MDes in Industrial Design Engineering.He works as an occasional professional photographer specializing in performers and is a passionate outdoorsman, pursuing snowboarding, mountain biking and fly fishing

Visiting LecturerRoyal College Of Art Apr 2019 - PresentLondon, Greater London, GbVisiting Lecturer on the Master’s Degree Healthcare + Design course run jointly with Imperial College's Department of Surgery. Since 2019, I have taught annually on the one-week module on Design for Behaviour Change in London. This is a mid-career course taught in eight one-week modules over two years. It draws equal numbers of designers and healthcare professionals, and it is rewarding to help these students achieve a better understanding of each other’s professions and learn ways to apply that to the design of products and services in healthcare. In one week, teams mixed from these two disciplines produce working prototypes of behaviour change products and justify them from a behavioural psychology perspective. It’s amazing what they create in that week.

Growing to 30 people at its peak, the consultancy performed at the forefront of the industry, invoking a highly user-centered design approach that improved customer appeal and market share for clients ranging from startup to Fortune 100. Bridge garnered many industry awards and I was a sought after speaker and workshop presenter at many industry-leading conferences. -
