A fabulous small Internet Service Provider that brought the Internet to most of Western North Carolina. After four years of steady growth we sold it to a company that eventually was bought out by Earthlink. We had 8,000 customers spread across WNC from Burnsville to Franklin. It was a great time to be in business and I am very grateful for the support we received as we learned the ins and outs of this new phenomenon, the Internet.

Two years after leaving Maremont Corporation I decided it was time to start my own company. There was a new product on the horizon, the personal computer, and that seemed interesting. I bought a ComputerLand franchise and opened in the Spring of 1983. We sold DEC, IBM and some other stuff that was junk. In six years we had six stores: Asheville, Hickory and Winston-Salem, NC; plus Anderson, Greenville and Spartanburg, SC. In 1992, ComputerLand Corporation was sold, my franchises expired and I sold or closed all my stores. ComputerLand was a nickel rocket, but it was quite a ride.

In the wild and wooly days of automotive public relations your success was measured by how much ink and exposure your products received in the automotive magazines. To that effect, Maremont's Gabriel brand shock absorbers needed a boost. My job was to give it to them. In 1977 they were nowhere. In 1978 they went on the map with an off-road shock, the Baja Ryder, that was introduced on a road trip through Phantom Canyon, Colorado. In 1979 we hit the jackpot by winning the Daytona 500 and the NASCAR championship. In 1980 it got even better, winning the Indy 500. The company was then sold and I bailed out to start my own business in North Carolina.

I was excited to work for Aaron D. Cushman, a legend in the Public Relations field. Aaron had been a B-24 bomber pilot in WWII. He was a delight to listen to as he told great stories about his flying days, and his company. My responsibilities included promoting the first World Polo Championship at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club. Pretty good assignment. "Go down there and promote that thing," Aaron said. Cool. I didn't know a polo pony from a glue factory nag. Three months later we had the U.S. Army Golden Knights jumping into our polo field. What a great place to work!
