I'm a software entrepreneur & tech advisor, software developer, product guy, Apple nerd, and espresso consumer. I love getting outside to bike, ski, and travel.I just started a new company called HumanTrue with a long time friend of mine. We're exploring AI solutions in the healthcare space, specifically targeting health literacy around clinical trials. In the past I co-founded Jive Software which pioneered the Social Business Software space. At Jive I helped grow it from a two-person startup to a successful public company of over 700 people world-wide. I grew the Engineering and Product teams, went through rounds of funding with world-class VCs (Sequoia and KP), and served on the board (pre-public). In 2016 I joined Cloudability and ran the Products team. We turned around product design & development and put the company on a successful course. At both companies, I contributed to key sales opportunities, interacted with hundreds of customers, and spoke at major conferences.I also spend my time advising tech startups and my alma mater (University of Iowa) and giving my time to interests I enjoy. On the nonprofit side, I was a long-term board member of a small private school in Portland. In that role, I did various things from development, strategic planning, and technology advising. I culminated my time by co-leading a successful effort to hire a new Head of School. Currently I advise or help small non-profits and am the board president of the Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA). Come ride our 600+ miles of singletrack!Specialties: software & tech (web, cloud, Apple products) / product (design, management, customers, strategy) / other (e-voting, Open Source)Interests: biking (mtb, road), skiing, travel, high school debate, Formula 1, photographyMiscellany: bash > zsh, Javascript > Java, AWS > others

Advisor & StrategyBrainbaseline Jan 2020 - Jan 2022Horsham, Pa, UsBrainBaseline was a startup dedicated to digitizing clinical research. We looked at how to best use devices like phones, tablets, and watches to help drug researchers design better studies, get better data, and to bring drugs to market faster.I advised the company on product and corporate strategy, team development, roadmap creation, fundraising, and technology usage. BrainBaseline has worked with major leading research universities and pharmaceutical companies.BrainBaseline was successfully acquired by Clinical Ink in late 2021. I helped the founder and other team members throughout the acquisition process. -
Vp Of ProductsCloudability Jan 2016 - Aug 2017I ran the Products team at Cloudability. That included Product Management, Product Marketing, and Product Design. Basically everything from product strategy to how the product looks and feels.Cloudability at the time was an independent startup in the cloud cost optimization space. We helped customers gain insight in to their cloud spend, optimize their usage and costs, and plan for future growth.I interacted with customers for feedback or roadmap presentations, contributed to key sales efforts, attended board meetings, worked with the rest of the exec team on strategy, and hired & managed a team. I also interacted with the major cloud vendors for partnerships, pre-release briefings, or common sales deals. I presented on the topic of cloud cost optimization at the 2016 AWS Re:Invent conference.

Co-Founder, Vp Of Engineering, Vp Product Management, Board MemberJive Software Feb 2001 - Aug 2013Austin, Texas, UsCo-founder and former board member. Day-to-day consisted of managing product releases, building the roadmap, working with customers, and planning strategy. Started the company with a co-founder in February of 2001 and left in August of 2013, two years after our IPO. Managed the development team, built the product management team, and evangelized the product inside and outside of the company.Jive stared out of a college project and my friend and I incorporated it in early 2001. We bootstrapped it by working with some of the biggest tech companies as initial customers. We invested what we made back in the company to grow the tech team and create real sales, support, and marketing teams. We reached an inflection point in 2006 as Web 2.0 was gaining popularity and decided to take our first round of funding from Sequoia in 2007. From there, we expanded geographically and made a few acquisitions over the years. We went public in 2011 (NASDAQ: JIVE, of course!) and ultimately the company was acquired in 2017.From a technology point of view, Jive started out as an early adopter of server-side Java but was distributed to our customers (on premise). Over time, we developed a cloud offering which started as a hosted version of the software back in the early days of AWS.Jive's biggest office was in Portland, Oregon and we had other major offices in California, the UK, and Israel. I was fortunate to be able to travel all over the US and parts of Europe/Mideast to work with our teams and visit customers. Jive also had a pioneering customer-driven conference called JiveWorld. -
Software Engineer4Charity May 2000 - Jan 2001Part of technical staff, my first programming job out of college! I worked with a very fun team, many of whom I still keep in contact. Our mission was to bring modern technology (at that time, the nascent internet) to nonprofits. What we take for granted today (donation engines, donor CRMs) was not commonplace back then and we built a number of those services.
