I practiced tax law for 25 years, specializing in ERISA (employee benefits) and estate planning, the first 11 years with one of NJ's largest firms (Lowenstein Sandler) and then with two smaller firms. I served as chair of the Section of Taxation of the NJ State Bar Association from 1989-90. I ventured out of legal practice to Neuberger & Berman for 2/1/2 years in the mid-90s, helping to launch N&B's trust company. In 1999 I left legal practice for good to join RegentAtlantic Capital, a fee-only wealth management firm that focuses on individuals and families with portfolios between $2 and $25 million. Until I retired in December 2009, I managed client relationships and provided expertise to the firm’s clients and advisors on investing, estate planning, asset protection, retirement plan design, and charitable giving. I have presented programs for numerous professional organizations, including the American, NJ State, and NYC Bar Associations, the NJ Society of CPAs, the Society of Actuaries, the NJ Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and Practicing Law Institute, and have authored articles for Journal of Taxation, Estate Planning, and Business Entities magazines. As a volunteer, I was a trustee of the Bonnie Brae School for Boys for 20 years, including four years as board president, have been a trustee of Drew University since 2008, of NJ Conservation Foundation since 2019, and of ReThink Energy NJ since 2020. I have served on the Somerset County Energy Council since 2018 and have been an active member of Citizens' Climate Lobby since 2019.I graduated from Wesleyan University and Harvard Law School with honors. Between college and law school I taught middle school for two years in Lilongwe, Malawi, as a US Peace Corps volunteer. I also served as a VISTA volunteer working as a legal assistant In Newark's Central Ward with the Newark Legal Services Project on a one-year leave of absence from law school. After leaving legal practice for private wealth management in 1999, I earned the Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Analyst designations.
