There are two types of technology people. Some (most?) are into technology for its own sake. They love to put things together and are always looking for new techniques, new algorithms, new tools. The do it for its own sake, motivated by the sheer joy of creating something that didn't exist before. When asked whey they built some new thing, they'll often answer, "Because I can." These people build some very cool things.I'm the other kind of technology person. I'm in the group that thinks technology for its own sake is nice, sure. What we're really interested in, though, is solving problems. Technology is helpful to us only insofar as it helps us do that. An example: I was once on a conference call with a bunch of people who were discussing a file transfer notification system they wanted me to build. There were all kinds of rules as to when a notice would be sent out, what kind of responses would be allowed, what would be automatic and what would require human intervention. I mostly listened. After about an hour they asked how long it would take and how much it would cost.I've built lots of complicated systems and I had to think for a bit. Finally, I said "This isn't going to cost a thing. You're asking for a notification system that's only needed when something goes wrong, but your file transfer system works well. Errors are very rare. When something happens, pick up the phone."They didn't need a new system. All they needed was to understand how they technology they already had could be applied to the problem at hand.So that's what I do. I get to use both sides of my brain: I help clients define goals and choose technology; I design software systems, both front and back-end; I write code and create graphics.
