William R. Moroney has, since retiring in 2011, become an advocate for revitalization and interpretation of National Park Service assets in the Georgetown community of Washington, DC. Serving as a member of the Boards of Directors of Georgetown Heritage and the Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park, he engages in volunteer efforts to preserve the historic aspects of Georgetown’s parks while at the same time encouraging their future use as educational, environmental and cultural laboratories.During his professional life, Moroney was an internationally recognized leader in the successful deployment of early-stage transformative technologies. For, example, he led organizations that in the early 1980s that drove electronic funds transfers to transform banking, in the 1990s serving as a catalyst to make email the indispensable communications tool it is today, and more recently accelerated utilities deployment of smart grids that are revolutionizing the energy business. He spent thirty years as a trade association chief executive, leading a variety of industry organizations including the Utilities Telecom Council, the MultiMedia Telecommunications Association, the Electronic Mail Association, the National Automated Clearing House Association, and the Electronic Funds Transfer Association. In addition to serving on several other industry organizations’ boards, Moroney’s earlier career included stints in marketing and communications, broadcast journalism, and political campaigns.
