About Bill Mott
For 35 years, I've been building networks and coalitions to catalyze collective action and grow the movement for a more sustainable society, a healthy world ocean, and a stable climate. Helping to collaboratively advance youth engagement, leadership, and advocacy for ocean and climate action is now my primary focus. Serving as the Executive Director of The Ocean Project, I've helped develop a global network of more than 2,000 organizations in 150+ countries that reach over 500 million people each year. To help our network of youth leaders and partner organizations effectively engage the public and advocate with policymakers, our team creates strategic communications tools and resources, develops collaborative campaigns, brokers connections for conservation, and provides opportunities for youth to lead.In 2002, I helped launch global coordination of World Ocean Day, growing it from zero events to thousands each year in nearly 200 countries and hundreds of millions engaged on social media. After successfully petitioning the UN to officially recognize 8 June as World Ocean Day each year, June has essentially become ocean month. I work closely with the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council, now with 140 members and alumni from 60 countries to grow the reach and impact of World Ocean Day in June and all 365 days of the year. Some of my best friends are from getting a Master of Environmental Management degree from Yale School of the Environment and a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources from Cornell University, but I learned practically everything I know on the job. I am passionate about truly collaborating to create synergies for a more just, equitable, and sustainable society and a healthy blue planet.
