I love the process of starting and building great companies. In 1987 I started Avid Technology, Inc. We built a great product and a great team, and today Avid is the world leader in video, film, and music editing systems. In 1991 I started Wildfire Communications along with co-founders Nick d'Arbleloff, Rich Miner, and Tony Lovell. We built a ground-breaking speech-based electronic assistant that worked over the phone. Wildfire was sold to Orange, PLC in 2000. In 1999 I started FutureBoston which built advanced mapping tools that let you understand the story of a place by looking precisely aligned maps over time. This is now www.mapjunction.com, also known as the Boston Atlas In 2002 I created a shared workspace called the Collaboration Space at Warner Research, in Cambridge, near Fresh Pond. I believe that shared workspaces are one key to creating the energy and relationships for startups. Now called the Brickyard Collaboration Space, it is run by the owner of the building.Starting in 2004, and continuing to today, I began work on a book about "How to Build Your Startup From the Heart." This book is based on my experiences and on what I've learned from angel investing over the years. In 2008, working with Tom Hopcroft and Heather Johnson at MassTLC, we created a new type of conference focused on helping early stage entrepreneurs. Called the MassTLC Innovation unConference, the most recent event sponsored 160 entrepreneurs and gathered over 600 people to help them.My focus now is on helping entrepreneurs with tools that are part of my Build Your Startup From the Heart work. One of those tools is very early stage investing, usually about $25,000. I generally like to be the very first money into the company. I'm willing (and even prefer) investing so early that the only traction is in the entrepreneur's head. I choose my investments based mainly on the entrepreneur, and not on the details of the idea.

President & FounderWarner Research, Llc May 1976 - PresentWarner Research is my general-purpose entity for engineering projects and some of my investing activities. It is a company I actually started with help from my Dad in 1976, just two years after I got hurt. In 1975, I started working a machine called the Whistle System to help quadriplegics control lights, telephone and TV just with a single whistle. My Dad had a company called Warner Manufacturing that made aluminum extrusions. I started the "Research Division" which I later shortened to Warner Research. With funding from him, I built the prototypes you see here.Today I still have an LLC named Warner Research, and I enjoy using it in the memory of my Dad, who helped me in so many ways, including helping me become an entrepreneur. In 1987, he even put up most of the seed money for Avid, saying yes during a lunch with he and my Mom. To this day I still seek to make decisions quickly and firmly, perhaps remembering that moment.

Advisory Board MemberBerklee College Of Music - Institute For Creative Entrepreneurship Jul 2014 - Aug 2019This new initiative at Berklee has been started by Panos Panay and is being run by Panos and also by Ken Zolot - who has taught entrepreneurship at MIT for years. I love working with both of them. I also love working with musicians since great music truly comes from the heart. Also, the techniques I've been working on about how to build your startup from the heart are in some ways easier taught to musicians because musical collaboration already works that way.

Founder & Co-ChairMasstlc Innovation Unconference Feb 2008 - Nov 2011The MassTLC Innovation unConference is based on a simple intention: to help entrepreneurs find new helpers, whether they are mentors, technical experts, or co-founders. Planning for the the yearly event (held in October) starts by gathering a huge roster of Volunteer Experts who will do one on one meetings with entrepreneurs at the event. Startup entrepreneurs then apply for sponsored positions. Last year we had 160 sponsored and listed entrepreneurs, and over 130 Volunteer Experts.Building on the Sponsored Entrepreneurs and the Volunteer Experts, we create a huge, day-long unConference where attendees set the day's agenda in the first 30 minutes. It's an amazing process that people routinely say is their favorite event of the year.
