After 20+ years teaching in IT, I have learned the significance of the meaning behind the sometimes abused quote attributed to Socrates; "A wise man knows he knows not". I'm constantly fascinated how all of the intricacies of this modern IT world are derived from the Boolean logic that attempted to reduce everything to what we now express as "ones and zeroes". Yet, in my teaching I find particular passion in teaching "the basics" and providing strong foundational skillsets that allow my students to find or be prepared for whatever the IT world throws at them.Prior to teaching, I had accumulated a BS in History and my first MS degree. After my first 5 years or so teaching, an AbD in a PhD in IT led to a second MS degree, as well as collecting ~16 industry level certifications. Even so, every class I teach is a unique opportunity to connect and learn from students and see things anew through their eyes or be challenged to improve my pedagogy to get to that most incredible moment where I know they "got it" - there is no better feeling in teaching.Beyond that, I'm also active in areas such as "maker" style electronics and IoT systems, woodworking/CNC routing - especially relating to building (and playing) guitars, and other very hands-on activities. My very extensive work history prior to any formal career encompassed everything from foodservice to working in an apple orchard or at a television station or digging ditches for propane installation. This is one reason I'm proud to work at the two-year collegiate level - I've had the honor of seeing many students that thought college wasn't for them give it a chance and change their lives for the better. It's good to be a part of that.
