Application ArchitectFlorida Blue (Via Interactive Resources) Apr 2017 - May 2018• Supervised development team to ensure projects were delivered on-time and within budget.• Architected event-driven data processing system using Apache Spark, Kafka, Hive, and a microservice. Spark was used to do set operations on inbound files before publishing the data to Kafka. Kafka topics provided a stream of event data for the microservice to consume. Multiple Kafka topic partitions allowed increased performance while not overloading the microservice’s internal MongoDB database. The microservice performed business rule validations before writing outbound data, including validation results, to Hive. Hive is the basis for data extracts and analytical reporting.• Designed and coded a fully asynchronous data processing microservice to enforce data-centric business rules. The microservice was written in Node.js, internally used MongoDB, and exposed its functionality via a GraphQL API. Created contextual data projections and caching to improve the performance GraphQL queries and reduce the load on MongoDB. Created security components to ensure data authorization at the entity level using JWT.• Designed event-driven data distribution system using Spark to detect the differences between daily full-files before creating, updating and deactivating entities via a GraphQL based microservice.• Implemented a file and record tracking pattern that allows full traceability across distributed polyglot databases.• Socialized architectural patterns, and their associated benefits, that provide a foundation for event stream processing using Apache Spark, Kafka, and Apex to enable near real-time analytics and data distribution across a polyglot database environment.• Created working RESTful machine learning prototype service using Python and XGBoost to predict which React.js UI components to show a specific user based on past actions and what member was being viewed. Presented the prototype and approach at Florida Blue’s internal TechCon.
