Starting a new role in the DPS SIU - July 24

In March 2022, I was one of twelve Detective Sergeants to implement teams known as the Local Digital Forensic Investigations Teams (LDFIT) across the BCU’s. The LDFIT’s were established to bridge the gap between Digital Investigations and Frontline Policing, something I have been incredibly passionate about over the years. Although we were told what the LDFIT’s would become in the future, the initial funding and direction was not forthcoming. This lack of direction did not phase me and I set about trying to get our name out to frontline officers and providing training packages to all teams so they knew what we could offer. I set up local processes utilising Microsoft Teams / SharePoint and Spreadsheets to track our work. Two years on and this Spreadsheet is still going strong and processes I had set up for my BCU were adopted across all LDFIT’s including an online submissions form I had developed. Our team is now a fundamental part of the borough and our work has been recognised by those in the SLT. I put this down to hard work and dedication to make the LDFIT a success and seeking new connections between departments to support Frontline Officers.

Entering a Uniformed environment as a Detective was a unique opportunity, with a certain “rivalry” that comes between the two. I have always been one to bridge gaps between departments and people and after spending two years on ERPT, I have to say this was the most enjoyable time I’ve had in my career. My initial role when joining the team was to assist frontline officers with their investigations, support the Frontline Sergeants with case file reviews and attending crime scenes at high priority calls to establish a CID presence at an early stage of an Investigation. Whilst my main role was with the response team, I began to assist the Volume Crime team as I had come to realise the officers were inexperienced, unsupported and there were serious failings with regards to detection of crime. I spoke to numerous officers to establish the problems and devised a plan to improve the department. I submitted my concerns and business case to my Senior Leadership Team to redeploy the Detective Sergeants on Response Team to the Volume Crime Team. This was a controversial move and one that did not make me popular with the other DS’s, but for me, we were failing victims of crime and failing our new members of staff. This was the right decision and one that was supported by the SLT and implemented within a month of my business case being submitted. After my plan was put into place, detection rates improved, case paper preparation improved and officers morale improved. The unit was also then able to become a rotation for new officers who would spend 6 months on one of our teams to help improve their case files and investigations. Due to our high performance we took on all Hate Crime Investigations across the BCU, which led to our BCU being ranked the best performing for Hate Crime Investigations in the Met.All this success would not have been possible had I not taken the unpopular decision to put my idea forward to the SLT.

East London

I formed a new unit called the Forensic Conversion Team (FCT) that worked closely with the East Area Burglary Robbery Team. My team consisted of myself and one officer focusing on Forensic Identifications which were being neglected by officers due to higher priority cases. It was clear that my team of just two officers were not going to be able to deal with the mammoth task alone and due to budgetary/resourcing reasons we were not able to take on any other staff. I was however informed that new Direct Entry Detectives were joining the BCU and I liaised with their coaches and my SLT to see if I could take on a couple of officers. I promoted our team as a good place for officers to learn about Investigations / arrests / interviews and case files. My plan was approved and I dedicated a lot of time into their training. This time and commitment paid off and we became the leading borough for Forensic Identification Conversions for three months running. I was then redeployed to the Burglary and Robbery Team where I was joined by more Direct Entry Detectives. I continued to support these officers and guide them whilst investigating some of the most violent robberies and burglaries I have seen in my career. These officers are credit to the organisation and they have all moved on to more high profile roles within the service.

East London

I started my career as a Detective in the Community Safety Unit on Barking and Dagenham Borough, protecting victims of domestic abuse. I moved on to the CID in August 2016 where I remained until taking the Acting Detective Sergeant role in the Burglary and Robbery Team. In my time as a Detective Constable, I dealt with some horrific scenes of crime and have aided in the prosecution of many offenders in that time also. I attended court regularly as an Officer in Charge and as a witness and was recognised regularly through Quality Service Reports and notably a Commendation for Tenacity and Dedication to Duty.

I covered Newham Borough briefly on an Emergency Response Team prior to moving on to being a Detective Constable. This role was initially responding to 999 calls, dealing with High Risk Missing Persons, Attending Sudden Deaths and initial report taking.

London Borough Of Haringey, England, United Kingdom

I rejoined Haringey BCU as a Police Officer during the Olympics. I joined during a large scale transformation from Safer Neighbourhood Teams to Neighbourhood Policing Teams, which covered a larger area. My main role was to walk the beat and engage with members of the public, but I also dealt with High Risk Missing Persons, Traffic reporting / management and attendance at Sudden Deaths. I assisted the SLT with monitoring crime trends and also took up the role of Operation Neptune and Operation Ringtone lead for the boroughs. Due to my work on Haringey being recognised, I was seconded to Operation Ringtone for six (6) months working in Festivals and then worked for the Notting Hill Carnival Team in 2014 Investigating numerous incidents that occurred at the festival that year.

I became a PCSO in March 2010 and worked on the Woodside and White Hart Lane Wards in Haringey. My main role was policing the beat and engaging with members of the public and challenging those who were acting suspiciously. I regularly attended Neighbourhood Watch events and reported intelligence through the Met's systems that would come from my days activities.

I worked as Programme Staff and a Lifeguard at Pilgrims Language School during the Summer of 2011 after enjoying the role previously in 2007. Like 2007, I was involved in maintaining the safety of the children at all times, whilst providing fun activities for them to complete on a daily basis.

Herne Bay

I worked for Active Life at both Kingsmead Leisure Centre in Canterbury and then Herons Swimming Pool (now Heron's Leisure Centre) between January 2006 and July 2007. I was a full time Lifeguard at both centres. I was responsible for the day to day care of members of public at the centres and was also responsible for the cleanliness of the centres during the day.I also worked as a Beach Lifeguard for two seasons at Herne Bay and Tankerton Beaches for Foreshore Services.

Pembury, Kent, United Kingdom

I was approached by someone who worked for Pilgrims whilst Lifeguarding in a Swimming Pool in Canterbury after they saw me running an event for kids at the leisure centre I worked. I was asked if I wanted to work for them for the Summer which I duly agreed to. Pilgrims is an amazing company, which offers children from an array of different countries to come over to the UK to learn English. I remember picking up the first kids from Italy who were unable to speak any English to me on their arrival, but the day I dropped them back to the airport on their last day they were speaking fluent English to me. I really enjoyed my time with Pilgrims, working with kids and helping them with learning English. I was responsible for running events with the kids and also guiding them on Day trips around London.

I worked as a Sales Assistant at Argos, Canterbury initially as a Christmas Temp and then was taken on as a full time staff member due to my performance over Christmas. I left Argos as I had obtained a National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification and a job at a local Swimming Pool.
