The core of billy's work is community building.billy has been calling dances for over thirty years, starting out in New Haven, Connecticut with the contra dance series that has been a fixture of the folk music and dance scene since 1976. In addition to contra dances in and around the northeast, he has called at various dance camps regionally and nationally.Much of his calling activity centers on special occasion "barn" dances including the monthly musical event BMAD at his home in Bethany, CT. Other such events include school dances, private parties, special occasions such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, and dances in extended care facilities where he has done dances for people using wheel chairs and walkers.Besides calling, he plays penny whistle for concert settings and hurdy-gurdy for special events, often with Mickey Koth (the fiddler in the band Wry Bred) when they are sometimes known as Out On A Whim. He has also danced in and played music for performing dance groups in and around the northeast.In addition, he calls maypole dances annually in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. Of late, he is also organizing, performing at and leading drum circles. Four times a year he hosts ritual gatherings honoring the Solstices and Equinoxes.For the last several years, he has been performing at and leading drum circles and finds this activity to play an increasingly important role in his personal spiritual growth.All of this activity is a manifestation of his commitment to fostering community through dance, music, drumming and ritual.
