I had an exciting volunteering opportunity presented by Suffolk Archives to create graphics for the upcoming Wolsey’s Ipswich exhibition at The Hold for the summer of 2023 as part of the Wolsey 550 project. The exhibition officer Emily, met with me and gave me a live brief detailing what the exhibition would display along with Wolsey’s history and his connection to his home town of Ipswich. From there I took to researching art styles of the 16th century, paintings and patterns popular of the high renascence era and worked on some concept ideas to best represent Wolsey’s story, his cardinal hat, the infamous cat rumoured to be his pet—or familiar according to his rivals—the iconic Tudor rose and the Wolsey’s Gate landmark. What stood out for me was the portrait of the cardinal, the silhouette alone is unmistakeable and I knew I needed to integrate this into the logo design. The final logo bridges the old with the new, the past with the present, Wolsey’s 550 yearlong story with contemporary Ipswich through the use of the bold, vibrant colour palette of the Wolsey 550 project branding. The flat design and block colours are brought to life through the decorative floral patterns of Tudor England which are merged with modern geometric shapes to create a contemporary design that is distinctive, unique and memorable. Everyone working at The Hold took treated me as part of the team, they were extremely approachable, relaxed and a genuine pleasure to be around. I am thankful for the opportunity to work on a live brief and get the much need work experience that will give me the upper edge in a highly competitive industry, and I am very excited to see my design displayed at the exhibition in the Summer.
