I’ve been working in the concrete industry for nearly 50 years. I started out as a laborer for a residential concrete company. I enjoyed the work, and I wanted to learn more, so I found an apprenticeship program for cement finishers. Three years later, I was a union Journeyman. Five years after that, I started my own business. In the mid-90s, I saw some of the exciting things happening with epoxies, and I moved into that market. I learned about chemical resistant materials, the differences between urethane and epoxies or aliphatics, how open-link or tight-woven molecules produce different results… So many interesting dynamics!As a Technical Service Specialist for Fenix Group, that hands-on experience and technical knowledge helps me connect with pros working in the field, because I’m better able to understand their questions or concerns and help them find practical, effective solutions. Recently, some finishers called, because they were having issues with mortar flaking. We solved that with some technical and procedural suggestions, as well as a few products from different companies in the Fenix Group family of brands. Our chemists are always working on something new, solving current problems while looking ahead, driving innovation in the industry, like our improved siloxane coating that will resist the harsher deicing chemicals being used today.As someone who knows, firsthand, the satisfaction you get from a job well done and the frustration you feel when something doesn’t go right, and someone who has always admired the technical expertise of chemists who develop better products, and petrographers who can slice concrete thin enough to examine it under a microscope and tell you why it failed, Fenix Group is a great place to be.
