In 1997 I seized the opportunity to make a radical change in my career. During the previous three years, I spent hours in an office in front of a computer screen writing and debugging code as a self-taught computer programmer. I loved it. It fed the analytical thinker and logical problem solver within me.At the same time, I was also a lay preacher in the church where I grew up. As a child, the notion of preaching repulsed me, as a young adult I was captivated. The practice of discovery and examination of ideas contained in a revered ancient book fascinated me. I was eager to share my conclusions and I loved doing so.Therefore, I made a risky decision in 1997, though I did not see it that way at the time. I decided to leave the robust and bountiful computer software industry and join the ranks of ordained clergymen who were committed to fighting poverty and its causes in Dallas, Texas. I was ordained and hired by a local church.Thus, I began a journey of faith and work in the nonprofit sector. Over the course of my career I have served in many roles, both executive and managerial, but more than anything else, I have been a student of justice and equity as it relates to disenfranchised people and segregated communities in our society. I have worked alongside of overworked mothers, fathers, and underserved students, who organized and fought to create positive change in our systems. I am still honored to be a part of the work that I was introduced to in 1997.
