The water rose steadily from my waist to mid chest and then its highest point just beneath my chin. I was awestruck by the silence that engulfed me: no lights, no power, no people, no animals or birds – just pure darkness and a surreal calmness. I had met Betsy a decade before, during my first week with Follett and in addition to being a fantastic client, she and I had struck up a friendship. When they let the water out of the Addicks Reservoir after Hurricane Harvey struck, I started keeping tabs on her via Facebook. It was nearing midnight when I saw a picture of her neighbor’s house flooded to the top of the garage door and I knew she was in trouble. Treading along methodically I was ripped from my reverie when my shin struck something hard and I lurched forward in the water, my body caving around something massive beneath the surface. My awe turned to panic for just a moment until I realized it was a submerged car invisible in the blackness that surrounded me. When I finally reached her, Betsy’s face was a sight to behold – terror fading to sheer relief. Friends were waiting just outside the flooded area to take her to their home and a man with a jet ski offered his help. Using his jet ski, we got everyone to safety. What does any of this have to do with business? Well, everything! As Maya Angelou once so brilliantly put it, “people will forget what you say, people will forget what you do, but people will never forget how you make them feel”. Employing this as my guiding principle has led to some of the greatest partnerships throughout my life and my career. Business has never been about products. Business has always been about people and the connections we forge.
