I joined the Barnsley College Board as a Student Governor in July 2024 and launched right into the role. I presented the Student Union Annual report which explains to the Governors what we have been doing in the previous year along with detail on how we have spent our budget and our plans for the previous year. Prior to the meeting I had worked closely with the Exec Director of Governance and Learner Voice Adviser to change the format of how we presented to make sure it was more interactive and painted a picture of the many and varied activities the student had undertaken but also the range of students that we work with. Ihave already planned for more interaction with the Board in the coming year including campus tours led by the students, feedback on freshers week, induction and the first term and a session at the annual strategic seminar promoting the student voice. I remain conscious that there is a lot to learn about the role and that there will be lots of decisions to make during the year but I am looking forward to raising the profile of students at the college and sharing the student voice.

As a Crew Trainer I play an incredibly important role on shifts. Becoming a Crew Trainer is the next step up from Crew Member. I am responsible for training and enhancing CPD across shop-floor for our Crew Members for their day-to-day work serving customers, preparing food, keeping our restaurants and kitchens clean and tidy and working well as part of a team. As part of my role, I support Crew Members skills and offer them extra help with any tasks they may have problems with. This has taught me skills relating to coaching and managerial/leadership as I have handled shift breaks and management in absence of a manager in the kitchen or oftentimes entire shift when the manager goes on their break. Working with new members of staff has helped my confidence and the role has really enhanced my ability to coach others through the enhanced training I undertook.

A Crew Member has three main responsibilities: Customer Service, Food Preparation and Cleanliness and Hygiene. Good customer service skills are integral to the way we do things at McDonald's. A crew member is expected to provide customers with a quick and accurate service and show sensitivity to their individual needs, both from behind the till as well as in the dining areas. Also involved working in a fast-paced kitchen environment as a potential leader in the absence of a kitchen manager.
