I am responsible for several seated and online programs in the natural sciences (biology, biomedical sciences, pre-veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, and wildlife rehabilitation) and social sciences (criminal justice, human services, and psychology). In my capacity as dean, I oversee staffing of both main campus and online courses, assess instruction and students learning (in collaboration with the office of institutional effectiveness), and report my findings directly to the office of the provost. Additionally, I work closely with the office of finance/business affairs to manage budgets associated with programs in the natural and behavioral sciences, and the office of admissions to ensure proper marketing and enrollment for our programs.I have also been active in developing other programs on campus, including early development of our outdoor recreation and management program (currently housed in the School of Business and Management) and pre-veterinary medicine. My colleagues and I are currently developing an annual conference for domestic animal veterinarians to learn essential care procedures for sick and injured wildlife.I serve on a variety of institutional committees, including our curriculum committee, our intramural research and teaching grant committee, and our campus writing committee. I also serve as a non-affiliated member of Appalachian State University's Institutional Biosafety Council.

As laboratory coordinator and assistant professor in the biology program at Lees-McRae College, I implemented a number of curriculum changes that modernized the program from a descriptive to mechanistic analysis of the life sciences. This included incorporation of several new courses with laboratory other other experiential-learning components. As program coordinator, I oversaw the implementation of new student learning assessment strategies for the program. These were developed to A) provide relevant information to accrediting bodies (e.g. SACSCOC), and B) to allow our faculty to further reevaluate our curriculum in a metrics-based manner.
