As of January 1, 2016 I will be taking over the position of Executive Director of the Sandy Springs Conservancy. The mission of SSC is to build partnerships that create, conserve, and connect parks and greenspace in the City of Sandy Springs. As ED I will be able to immerse myself in placemaking through greenspace conservation and development and connectivity. My role as ED will occupy approximately 75% of my consulting time, leaving 25% available to clients in Georgia and North Carolina.

Over ten years experience fly fishing small streams and rivers in the North Georgia Mountains and Western North Carolina. I am an experienced small stream wade fisherman and innovative fly tier. I prefer the role of teacher/coach, rather than a guide, as I work best with folks who want to learn the art and science of fly fishing for trout. I practice catch and release fly fishing and work hard to leave no trace.

Clients included the Atlanta Regional Commission, Cobb Housing, Inc., the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Economic Research Associates, and the Wynnton Initiative, a coalition of Columbus, GA neighborhood organizations.

As chief executive officer of this non-profit housing development company, oversaw all aspects of the organization, including non-profit management, fundraising, board development, strategic planning, budget development and financial management, new project development, resident development programs and asset management. Responsible for a $900,000 annual operating budget, 10 employees, and a $20,000,000 real estate portfolio that included 2,000 units under management.

As chief operating officer, oversaw all operations of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Functioned as chief administrator for the Georgia Trust, a 9,500 member 501(c)(3) education, advocacy, and technical assistance organization, and America's largest statewide preservation organization. Responsibilities included the management of 24 full-time staff, with an additional 10 project staff funded through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, oversight of a $1.7 million annual operating budget comprised of endowment income, membership dues, fundraising monies, special grants and special events revenues. Additionally responsible for development of advocacy strategies in collaboration with key Trust staff and trustees, development of new technical assistance and program initiatives, board and trustee relations, and the management of three historic properties.

Functioned as chief operating officer for the Foxfire Fund, Inc. a 501(c)(3) literary, charitable, and educational organization. Duties of the Vice President included the management of 12 staff persons, oversight of a $1 million annual budget and a $3 million endowment, fundraising (including a $2.25 million capital campaign), community relations, management of over 110 acres of land and 25 buildings, and the development and general oversight of all programmatic activity, including a 17-site national network of Foxfire teachers. After the departure of Foxfire’s President and Founder, served as Executive Director for one year.

Provided technical assistance to state and community commercial area revitalization programs. Assistance included board development, training programs and workshops, organizational assessments, development of fundraising and action plans, and issue-specific problem solving.

From 1988 to 1990 directed the highly successful National Main Street Center, a self-funded downtown revitalization outreach program. Responsible for the management of 24 staff persons and a $2 million annual budget. Oversaw all aspects of this national program in 31 states and 630 communities. Ensured a high level of quality, commitment and effectiveness in field services, conferences, product development and a network membership program. Work History at the NMSC: After a national search, I was hired in 1983 by the NMSC as a Program Associate, one of two initial field staff hired to begin the national program expansion. Over my time at the NMSC I provided direct fee-for-service consulting services to over 30 communities in state programs in Oregon, South Carolina, Arkansas and Virginia. I then became Manager of State Programs, overseeing the NMSC's state program consulting services, expanding the reach of the program from 15 states and a $500,000 annual budget to a 28 state initiative with a $1 million annual budget. In addition, I continued to provide technical consulting services to programs in South Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee and Virginia. As the national program grew I was promoted to Program Manager for Field Services, managing the NMSC's highly successful Field Services Division. In this role I was responsible for 12 field staff and a services consulting budget of $1.4 million through fee-for-service contracts with statewide programs, urban area programs and independent small town programs. During this time I also continued to provide technical assistance to states and communities as a senior-level professional. In 1988 I became the National Director.

Directed the revitalization of downtown Rome through the management for the public sector Downtown Development Authority, and the Private Merchants Association, PRIDE, Inc. Effectively forged a public/private partnership that continues to this day. Successfully sought designation as a Georgia Main Street City (Rome was one of the 30 cities in the original 6 state National Main Street Pilot Program). Managed membership, low-interest loan and design assistance programs, and all downtown economic development initiatives. Rome has been designated a Great American Main Street City.
