I am a pediatrician and global public health professional. Here are some things about me and my work:1. Medicine and public health are my passions. As a little girl, I went to India to visit my grandparents and watched my physician grandfather get up from dinner one day and run to his hospital to help a patient. I wanted to be a doctor ever since. 2. I have worked on newborn and child health in over 20 countries, spanning Africa, Asia, and Latin America. I am equally committed to caring for children of all ages in my local community as a general pediatrician. 3. I am board-certified in pediatrics and obesity medicine. I chose to pursue further training in obesity so I could better care for the growing pediatric population facing obesity and non-communicable diseases. I also believe obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges we will face domestically and internationally in the coming years.4. I am creative and entrepreneurial. I won an innovation competition for my idea to redesign neonatal intensive care units in Malawi to better deliver family-centered care. I had the privilege of working with a team of talented engineers and health workers to make it a reality. As a first-year medical student I founded an organization that worked with the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health and civil society organizations to deliver social programs and do health research. The organization lives on today. I have always loved working in interdisciplinary teams.5. I am not afraid to take risks. After I finished my training in pediatrics, I made an unconventional choice to move to India to work on rural newborn health programs. I gained intensive field experience, and came back with an appreciation of the complexity of global public health field operations.6. I believe in the power of advocacy. As a pediatrician, I have helped patients get speech services in school, disability accommodations for housing, and insurance coverage for medications. As a public health professional, I am media-trained and have written editorials, given speeches, and have been a guest expert on TV, radio, and print.7. I am an avid reader and enjoy setting outlandish yearly reading goals. I stay on top of the latest in my field, but also love reading non-fiction and learning about topics completely outside of my profession. Some of my recent favorites are On Grand Strategy and Exercised.
