Being a teacher for 37 years, in three different countries (India, Jamaica and UnitedStates), teaching in four very different high schools as well as in the anatomy department of University of West Indies Medical school, one would think that I am an expert in my field. Of course, I have knowledge and expertise of the contents of many subjects (AP and A level biology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, Neuroscience, biotechnology, embryology, Physics etc ). But the way science is expanding, I still find myself trying to keep abreast .Exposing my students to current topics as well as learning along with them is very important to me. I enjoy and try to avail every possible professional opportunity that I can get. If I am teaching multiple sections, I learn a new way to facilitate the same topic in other sections. The beauty of teaching is in wow moments among learners that comes from engaging and exploring. I love to challenge young minds. I am an aggressive and progressive teacher. I enjoy trying new methods and learning along with my students. Teaching to me is like a culinary art, you have indigenous ingredients and flavor profilesand your job is to use just the right method to make a perfect dish and garnish yourpresentation. I see my role as a facilitator whose job is to compassionately engage,inspire, and nurture students as well as demonstrate passion for teaching and learning. I have seen that my students are engaged more if they are challenged continuously. If the work is too easy to accomplish they lose their interest. Although, sometime challenge can be frustrating but with a little guidance, it works extremely well and is very rewarding for students in their learning process. My success as a teacher is my ability to uniquely push students to be their best academic self. I make them see the relevance and joy in it. i encourage my students to be curious to think deeper and ask relevant questions. I care for their well being as well their learning. I think my students know that they can talk to me about their feelings, ideas and thoughts. They know I am there for them whenever they need to seek help. My personal interest in the field of epigenetic allowed me to become a certified food and lifestyle health coach who specializes in gut health. My classes are challenging but students find them interesting. I feel fortunate being a teacher. Teaching is a rewarding profession, and I am proud to be one.
