About Birgit Smith Burton
Birgit is the Chief Executive Officer of AADO, the African American Development Officers Network, which she founded at Georgia Tech in 1999 to provide professional development, education, employment support, mentorship, and networking opportunities for fundraisers of color. She is a well-regarded speaker on the topics of fundraising and diversity and has authored articles on diversity in the fundraising profession. Birgit co-authored the book, The Philanthropic Covenant with Black America, contributed to the book Five Minutes for Fundraising, A Collection of Expert Advice, and tells her personal story in the book Collecting Courage, which shares the lived experiences of Black women and men working in the nonprofit and charitable space (published fall 2020).During her 26-year career at Georgia Tech she led her team in raising over $700M from private philanthropic foundations to support programs, scholarships, and capital projects. Birgit wasselected to participate in the first cohort of Leading Women @ Tech and was a recipient of the team award for Outstanding Achievement in Research Program Development for the MarcusCenter for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing.For nearly a decade, she has served on the global board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and has the distinction of being the first African American woman in AFP’s 62- year history to be voted chair of the AFP Global Board. Birgit received the Opportunity and Inclusion Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education which recognized her leadership in fostering inclusion and diversity within the fundraising profession. In 2020 the R.I.S.E. Fund was established in Birgit’s honor with a mission to advance women of color in fundraising by providing Resources, Inspiration, Support, and Education.In addition to serving as chair of the A.E. Lowe Grice Scholarship Fund, which honors her grandmother, Birgit serves on the advisory council for Somos El Poder (A National Latinx Fundraising Institute) and the advisory committee for Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy (WOC). As the executive director, Birgit continues to lead the Foundation Relations team in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding all Atlanta based, national, and international private foundations.

As senior director of Foundation Relations, in addition to the responsibilities as director of Foundation Relations, Birgit managed a team of five professionals including a senior grant writer, senior administrative professional, development director, development associate, and researcher. The team was responsible for over 300 foundation prospects and raised $309M toward Georgia Tech's successful $1.8B capital campaign. Birgit was personally responsible for a portfolio of 100 private foundations, each with the capacity to make grants in the amount of $500K+. This responsibility included traveling with the Institute’s President and senior leadership to cultivate and solicit major foundation gifts to support the priorities of the Institute.
Director Of Foundation Relations
As director of Foundation Relations, Birgit was the primary contact between Georgia Tech and private philanthropic foundations - local and national. She educated private foundations about Georgia Tech's capabilities and provided faculty and staff with current information on foundations and available grants and assisted them through the entire proposal clearance and submission process. She coordinated private foundation activities with more than 25 Unit and Regional Development Officers. She worked with the deans of the six colleges and worked closely with Georgia Tech’s President on projects of Institute priority. With a staff of three professionals, her department annually raised $8M-$12M. During the previous capital campaign, Foundation Relations exceeded its goal of $40M, by raising more than $107M.
Associate Director Of Foundation Relations
As the associate director of Foundation Relations, Birgit interacted with faculty and staff whose programs or research were in need of private funding. She researched foundations, interpreted guidelines and wrote and edited proposals in preparation for submission. Birgit worked with local and national private foundations and established good working relationships with program officers. She worked closely with the Director of Foundation Relations and together they were successful in securing several unprecedented grants from foundations to Georgia Tech.
Area Director
As the area director, Birgit was responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of corporations, foundations, alumni, major individual donors and organizations throughout the state of New York. She personally recruited high-level individuals to chair various campaigns. She planned and organized over 100 special events including the Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon. Birgit prepared oral and written communication and addressed media inquiries on a regular basis. As the first and only director of the Upstate New York UNCF office for eleven years, Birgit served as the liaison between the local office and the national headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.Highlights:• Engaged then New York State Governor, George Pataki, to chair the UNCF statewide corporate campaign. • Successfully solicited a $400K gift from the Statler Foundation which was matched with a $100K gift from the Walter Annenberg Foundation to create a scholarship in hotel and hospitality management at several UNCF schools. • Helped establish a partnership with UNCF and the New York State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA)
