I work as a Frameworks Engineer in the Natural Languages team at Apple Inc.I am primarily interested in artificial intelligence. More specifically, statistical machine learning (graphical models, Bayesian data analysis, cluster analysis, structured prediction), natural language processing (syntactic and semantic parsing, WSD, NER), data mining, information retrieval and search, and applied optimization.I received the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in electrical engineering in May 2008 from the National Institute of Technology, Surat in India and the Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) degree in electrical and computer engineering in May 2010 from The University of Texas at Austin. I further worked on my Ph.D in natural language processing and machine learning for 2 years, before taking an extended leave from the PhD program since May 2012.While in graduate school, I worked thrice with the Natural Languages team at Apple Inc. (language modeling in 2012, Chinese input method systems in 2011 and natural language syntax and grammar in 2010) and once with the Data Analytics team at LinkedIn Corp. (data mining and trend analysis in 2009) in the Silicon Valley in California.During my undergraduate years, I used to work on cluster analysis and image segmentation (especially, CT scan images of the brain) at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta and the National Institute of Technology, Surat.• Specialties: • Machine Learning• Data Mining• Natural Language Processing• Information Retrieval• Syntactic and Semantic Analysis of Natural Languages• Latent Variable Models for Information Extraction

Natural Language Processing Intern - The Frameworks GroupApple Inc. Jan 2012 - Aug 2012Cupertino, California, UsLanguage modeling, tagging, parsing and disambiguations. During this period, I also completed a short course, learning Simplified Chinese at Stanford. -
Graduate Student In Machine Learning And Natural Language ProcessingThe University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2008 - May 2012Austin, Tx, UsMy relevant graduate coursework included: Machine Learning • Data Mining • Learning Theory - Statistical and Computational Complexity • Natural Language Processing • Formal Semantics • Semisupervised Learning for Computational Linguistics • Neural Networks for Multiagent Systems • Logic Based Artificial Intelligence • Information Retrieval and Web Search (audit) • Convex Optimization • Computational Statistics • Theory of Algorithms • Distributed Systems Some of the projects for the graduate courses I worked on were: Sparse Principal Component Analysis via Semidefinite Programming (Data Mining) • Heterogeneous Committee of Classifiers for Active Learning in Word Sense Disambiguation (Natural Language Processing) • Communication in Multiagent Reinforcement Learning (Neural Networks) • Cauchy based Reed Solomon Codes for Fused Data Structures (Distributed Systems) • Analyzing Sentiment and Perspective via Topic Models (Semisupervised Learning for Computational Linguistics) • Training Conditional Random Fields on Large-scale Datasets with Latent Variables (Computational Statistics) -
Graduate Research Assistant: Machine Learning Research GroupThe University Of Texas At Austin Jan 2011 - Jan 2012Austin, Tx, UsI worked on semantic analysis in natural language processing. Under investigation were two approaches to semantic parsing - one based on word alignment, similar to machine translation (WASP) and the second based on string kernel similarity (KRISP), their respective scalability issues and ways in which the semantic parsers (natural languages to formal meaning representations) can be improved. I also remained interested in a third point of view: inducing semantic parsers via generative models.Advised by Professor Raymond Mooney. -
Graduate Research Assistant: Poldrack LabThe University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2010 - Dec 2010Austin, Tx, UsI worked on latent variable analysis on text data from neurobiology/functional-MRI journals and OHBM abstracts. The work, which was a part of developing a cognitive brain atlas, mainly revolved around thematic latent variables such as topic modeling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and its variants/extensions). We also carried out semantic mapping between text topic-models and similar topic-models generated via the corresponding voxel data.Work published in Society for Neuroscience Conference, Washington DC, 2011.Journal article: PLoS Computational Biology (2012).Supervised by Professor Russel Poldrack. -
Graduate Teaching AssistantThe University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2008 - May 2009Austin, Tx, UsEE 364D Introduction to Engineering Design. Managed five groups (of approx. 4 each). Provided technical supervision for senior year design projects in electrical and computer engineering. One group went on to become the runners-up in the final senior year design project competition (Spring 2009).EE 319K Introduction to Microcontrollers. Graded laboratory assignments, provided demonstration lectures, and held office hours (Fall 2008) -
Natural Language Processing Intern - The Frameworks GroupApple Inc. May 2011 - Aug 2011Cupertino, California, UsSecond stint with the Natural Languages Team (Core Toolbox). I worked on making Chinese (pinyin) input method systems more flexible on Mac OS and iOS. -
Natural Language Processing Intern - The Frameworks GroupApple Inc. May 2010 - Aug 2010Cupertino, California, UsI worked with the Natural Languages team within the Frameworks group. The objective was to investigate syntactic parsing as a tool for grammar checking. I examined 14 different grammar formalisms and associated syntactic parsers and then refined and expanded a current theory of English grammar. -
Data Mining Intern - The Analytics TeamLinkedin Jun 2009 - Aug 2009Sunnyvale, Ca, UsI worked on the Hadoop Java platform for distributed computing and large-scale data mining. Focus was on text-mining for lexicon analysis, opinion and sentiment mining. Tremendous experience dealing with real-life data and exposure to Web 2.0 technology. [Skill Set: Java, Hadoop, Pig, MySQL] -
